Trouble Strikes Jeff Anton At Mansfield

Mansfield, Ohio (August 25, 2007) - Racing luck was on Jeff Anton's side last week at Lime Rock Park, when he got a third place finish at the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East Series race at Lime Rock Park. But that luck turned bad the next time out, as an accident and a mechanical problem prevented him from finishing the Mansfield 150 at Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Park. He was nineteenth in the final results.

Switching from the road course car to the trusty short-track Chevrolet, Anton got his first laps on the Mansfield half-mile that was hosting the Busch East Series for the first time. While his practice times were not encouraging, the team made a major improvement for qualifying and timed in tenth fastest.

"We were real tight getting into the corner in practice, and depending on where we were on the track, the car would be real tight or real loose, and I wasn't too sure where to go with it," he said. "So we changed our front spring package right before qualifying even though we didn't get a chance to try it out in practice. We talked it over and we knew we wouldn't be able to try any changes out with the time left, but if we thought it would help the car, then we should go ahead and change it.

"This car has never qualified well, and this is one of the best qualifying runs it's had, so we're pretty excited about what we've got," Anton continued. "I think it's going to be a good race car. We picked up time in qualifying, and the car should get faster after we put some laps on the tires. We're right where we should be, so I think it'll be a real good car for us."

At the start of the race, Anton found himself subject to some fumes inside the car that were starting to affect his race.

"We were running pretty good in the beginning, but then we started to get a lot of fumes in the car, like there was some rubber or something on the headers and it was burning up," he said. "I could feel it in my eyes and it was starting to make me sick in the car. Fortunately, it went away after a little while."

Anton was racing in twelfth position on lap 99 when he and another car got together entering the first turn. The two cars spun to the outside as the caution flew.

"We were trying to run real clean even though he got into me a few times," he explained. "I was giving him plenty of room, but going into turn one he just took me out. I don't know how much lower I could have gone, I gave him all the room in the world. We'll have to watch the video to see what really happened."

Anton came to pit road to have the crew check out the damage and make a quick chassis adjustment, hoping to get to the finish. But with fifteen laps to go, his car just shut down. The No. 30 Baran Institute of Technology/Engineered Floors, Inc. Chevrolet had to be pushed to pit road where the diagnosis could not be made in time to return to the race and he was forced to watch the end of the race from pit road.

The entire Anton Racing team will look to rebound when the Busch East Series returns to action on September 14th at New Hampshire International Speedway, where Anton finished fourteenth in June's race there.
