NASCAR Camping World East Series set for return visit to South

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. -- For the third straight year, South Boston Speedway is preparing to host the NASCAR Camping World East Series in racing action on Saturday, May 30.

The NASCAR Camping World East Series competitors will battle it out Saturday night in a 150-lap race, which is set to get the green flag at 7 p.m. Also scheduled as part of the NASCAR Camping World 150 event is a 150-lap shootout for the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model Stock Car Division. That event will be run at the conclusion of the NASCAR Camping World East Series race.

Prior to green-flag racing action, fans will have a chance to go trackside to visit with their favorite drivers, take some photographs and get autographs during a Fan Appreciation Session, slated from 5:45 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Up to 30 NASCAR Camping World East Series cars will take the green flag Saturday night. The top 26 positions for the event will be decided during qualifying.

Among the drivers expected to be in the field for Saturday night's NASCAR Camping World 150 is Matt Kobyluck, who won the inaugural NASCAR Camping World East Series event at South Boston in 2007.

"South Boston is a fun race track," Kobyluck said. "It's fast. You can run two-wide through the corners. It's been a fun place to go and the fans have been great. We look forward to going back."

Others who have indicated their attempt to qualify for the NASCAR Camping World East Series event Saturday night include Mooresville, N.C. competitors Steve Park and Jarit Johnson, along with Ryan Truex of Cornelius, N.C.

Max Gresham, a development driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, will get his first chance behind the wheel in a NASCAR Camping World East Series event Saturday night. Gresham became eligible for the series when he turned 18-years-old on April 30.

"The anticipation for this first race has been real high," Gresham said. "Ever since we went and talked to Joe Gibbs about possibly running, I've been excited for this first race at South Boston."

Saturday's event will mark the first-ever race for Gresham at America's Hometown Track.

"I just can't wait for this first race to happen," Gresham said. "It's going to be a real good one, and hopefully we can keep our nose clean and finish the race the first time out."

Practice sessions for the NASCAR Camping World East Series and the NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model Stock Car Division will be held from noon until 2:45 p.m. Saturday. Grandstand gates will open at 3 p.m. and qualifying time trials for both divisions will follow. Late Models are set to qualify first at 3:45 p.m., while the NASCAR Camping World East Series drivers are set to qualify at 4:45 p.m.

Advance tickets are on sale for $15 each up until 5 p.m. on Friday, May 29. Adult general admission tickets at the gate will be $20. Tickets for youth ages 7-12 are priced at $10 each. Kids ages 6 and under will be admitted free with a paying adult. The rain date is set for Sunday, May 31.
