BECHTELSVILLE, PA June 14, 2003 . . . Even with heavy thunderstorms throughout the area and a couple of light showers falling on the track Doug Manmiller and Rick Todorow were not going to let Ma Nature keep them from Victory Lane at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. Manmiller, a multi feature winner last season, won his first of the season wheeling the GMI Mechanical/Work's Restaurant Bicknell #00 to victory in the 30-lap U.S.Army sponsored NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified stock car race. In the companion 20-lapper for Late Model stock cars Rick Todorow was able to bring his Juniper Auto Body #93 home first for his initial win of the season.
The three hour show featuring fifteen events of racing saw young Ryan Watt go to the front of the 29 car starting field in the 30-lap Modified stock car feature at the drop of the green. At five laps Steve Swinehart, looking for his first career win, moved in front of the pack. A wild multi-car accident in the third turn on the 11th lap brought out the red flag stopping the race. No one was injured but several race cars, including Craig VonDohren's mount, were severely damaged. VonDohren, a multi time track champion, was not able to continue. Also eliminated were Jason Smythe, Danny Erb, John Willman, John Durling, Mike Bailey, Cliff Quinn and Glenn Strunk.
On the restart Doug Manmiller took command with former champion Ray Swinehart in close pursuit. The second half of the 30-lap main event was pretty much a two car battle between Manmiller and Swinehart with Jeff Strunk, defending track champion, charging toward the front from his 15th starting position.
At the finish Mamiller, who calls Wyomissing, PA home, was just the narrowest of margins ahead of Jeff Strunk (Bethel) when he crossed the finish line. Third spot went to Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville) followed by Kevin Hartnett (Perkasie) and Meme DeSantis (Temple) who came from 14th. In Victory Lane Manmiller gave much of the credit for his win to his car owner Greg Sarangoulis who had sat him down and gave him a Dale Carnegie type Pep Rally and got his confidence back.
In the 20-lap main event for the NASCAR Late Models Harry Neiman Jr. went to the front at the drop of the green. On the ninth circuit of the one-third-mile banked clay oval Bill Henning brought out the caution when he spun. On the restart Rick Todorow, coming from sixth starting spot, took the lead. Todorow had had the fastest late model in the early evening warm-ups. Tow laps later Randy Stoudt, a multi feature winner in 2002, came up to challenge Todorow and the balance of the 20-lap event was a very close battle between eventual winner Rick Todorow, who calls Quakertown, PA home, and second place finisher Randy Stoudt (Pottstown). Third went to point leader Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville) followed by Harry Neiman Jr. (Pottstown) and Chris Shuey (Orefield).
Qualifying heat races for the 54 Modifieds on hand were won by Jeff Strunk, Meme DeSantis, Kevin Hartnett, Craig VonDohren and Ray Swinehart. Consolation races were won by Jon Kellner Sr., Shawn Reimert and Mike Bailey. The Cash Dash, featuring the heat winners, was won by Kevin Hartnett and was worth at least $300.
In the Late Model preliminaries Harry Neiman Jr., Terry Snyder and Ray Swinehart won while Buddy Wharton was able to top the field in the consolation race.
Racers will try for two straight Saturdays of racing when the NASCAR Modifieds and Late Models return for Deka Batteries Night at Grandview Speedway on Saturday, June 21; 7:30 p.m. Deka employees will be taking part in activities during the course of the evening and will have some prizes for lucky fans in the grandstands.
Dodge, sponsor of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, will be sponsoring the Saturday, June 28th show which will feature at least 13 events of modified and late model stock car racing.
And on Sunday, June 29th, 7:30 p.m. the PA Speedweek 410 Sprint Series will be featured with many of the top talents in sprint car racing being seen in action. The American Racing Drivers Club Ray's Yamaha Polaris' Victory Series will make up the second part of the show.
Two recently rained out events, Rossi Welding Night and Richard Zuber Realty Night, are being rescheduled. The new dates will be announced shortly.
Grandview Speedway, a NASCAR sanctioned short-track racing facility, is located on Passmore Road, just off Route 100, 10 miles north of Pottstown, in Bechtelsville, PA. For race information telephone 610.754.7688 or visit their website at www.grandviewspeedway.com.
