Notes of Interest: Since the Series returned to the Greenville-Pickens Speedway in 1995, Mike Swaim Jr. has been the only pole winner, setting a new qualifying record in 1995 of 21.202 sec. at an average speed of 84.898 mph. Look for that record to be broken here again this week. Also, in 1995 Danny Bagwell picked up his third career win here after an incredible battle with Will Hobgood throughout the entire race. In 1996 Bagwell's Ford was once again leading early in the race but it was Hobgood who was the first to the checkers this time, having to beat out Swaim Jr. for the honors after Bagwell dropped out with engine problems. In 1997, it will once again be the 20 year-old Mike Swaim Jr. who will have the attention focused on him as he comes into this race with a 132 point lead over Will Hobgood in the Series point race and an impressive season- long run going. But I look for the Ford brigade to do well here again this year. Pat Patterson is due to break out of his string of bad luck and with the Ford's preference for this circuit, this could be an opportunity for him to make an impressive showing. Rookies, Michael Cogdell and Ernie Yarborough will also be carrying the Ford banner this weekend and would love to close the gap between themselves and rookie point leaders, Charles Powell III, Ricky Bryant and Christian Elder. With the halfway point of the season behind us now, the teams are gearing up for the charge towards the championship and there's no better place to kick off a championship challenge than right here in front of the avid race fans of Greenville-Pickens.
