Last lap passes, and a Fiery End………..At Jax Raceways By: Donnie Helmly
Jacksonville, Florida (April 11 1999) Great weather conditions, a full field of race cars, and a capacity crowd were the ingredients it took to make for an exciting night of racing action at Jax Raceways on Saturday night.
The Late Model Division saw Jeff Godbee set fast time on a slick track, turning in a lap of 19.466, well off his record, and putting him on the pole. Buddy Gieger set second fast time, placing him on the outside pole. The fire of the 30-lap feature saw Gieger getting the lead with a spine tingling move into the first turn. Gieger wouldn't hold the lead long, as Godbee took his GRT Chassis Chevrolet to the front, but it was short lived as well. Former division Champion Steve Whitener had his Warrior Chassis Hooked up, and drove past both of them, and sped away to claim his first win of the season. Godbee tried to over take Whitener during the closing laps, but was forced to settle for second. David Crews passed Gieger in the waning laps to take home third, with Gieger in fourth, followed by former Rookie of the year Buster Delay in fifth. Six through ten was made up of Fred Schell, Robby Geiger, Chuck Meredith, Homer Leonard and Travis Burris.
The Open Wheel Modified Division saw Kenny Bayless as fast qualifier with a fast lap of 21.323, and the early leader, until Bayless and second place runner Keny Porter got together with both cars spinning and bringing out the caution. This placed placing both cars to the tail of the field. Third fastest qualifier, David Ryals would take over from there, and lead until the final lap, when Ronnie Ponce took it away from him, and held on to claim his first win of the season. Third through tenth was made up of Robert Balkcom, Kevin Bayless, Keny Porter, Robert McCormick, Roy Knight, Pete Parkes, Marty Whitener and Calvin Pike.
The Hobby Stock Division saw bumper to bumper racing action through out the 20-lap event. Lee Blackshear claimed his second race of the season, but the last laps changed the positions from 2nd on back, as a last lap wreak took out some of the front runners. When the smoke cleared, Randy Clark JR crossed in second, with Tony Callaway in third. Fourth was Perry Dowling, with Donnie Helmly, making up the top five. Six through tenth was Calvin Pike, James Jeffers, Marty Kelly, Rick Hutchinson and Robert McDaniel.
The Powder Puff Division saw some bumping and banging on the last lap of Competition, which would change the outcome. Three time division champion Karen Greenselt had made a bump and run move on Holton to take the lead. Holton would wait until the final lap to retaliate, making it the race-winning move, spinning Greenslet. Holton would win the race with Shelly Petteway in second, Patty Duren would be third. Greenslet would catch a lower gear and recover to finish fourth, with Kim Lester and Julia Callaway making up the rest of the field.
The Pure Stock event got off to a bad start as a horrendous wreak on the back stretch, saw three cars involved in a fiery wreak. The track officials used every available extinguisher to put the fire out. After the fire was out, the track owners cancelled the feature until next week, do to lack of fire equipment needed to be on the track for the remainder of the laps. The Pure Stock feature will be run from the lap it was stopped on, this weekend, as well as their weekly event.
