NASCAR RECOGNIZES KANSAS SPEEDWAY FOR DIVERSITY AWARDS
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 7, 2005) -- This month's NASCAR diversity spotlight highlights Kansas Speedway and its contributions in diversifying the business of NASCAR. Kansas Speedway has been a leader in minority business development since being built in 2001. The track was named as Corporation of the Year for 2005 by the Minority Supplier Council. In 2004, track president Jeff Boerger was named CEO Advocate of the Year by the same group.
"We are very encouraged by the lead Kansas Speedway has taken in building a diverse group of vendors," said NASCAR Director of Diversity Tish Sheets. "Increasing minority suppliers and vendors will benefit the entire industry, including teams, tracks and sponsors. A diverse supplier base will improve business by bringing lower costs, competitive pricing and cutting edge products and designs."
Kansas Speedway President Jeff Boerger said, "We're proud of our involvement with minority-owned businesses throughout the State of Kansas and the Kansas City region, and are proud to be a leader in innovative projects and spending with minority businesses. We value the relationships that we have established with many of these businesses and will continue to look for new opportunities every day."
During construction, Kansas Speedway vowed to steer at least 18 percent of its business to minority-owned companies. That goal was exceeded by more than six percent. The track also set operational spending goals with minority-owned businesses in the areas of professional services, goods and supplies, and other services on a day-to-day basis. These goals have been met and exceeded every year.
"The speedway walks the walk by engaging qualified MBE's (Minority Business Enterprises) into their purchasing pool. We appreciate their support of the council and our mission," said Lonnie Scott, President/CEO of the Minority Supplier Council.
The Corporation of the Year designation is the Minority Supplier Council's highest award and is presented to a corporation that consistently demonstrates commitment to minority business development. The Minority Supplier Council is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of the minority business economy in Kansas City, Western Missouri and Kansas.
NASCAR will spotlight teams, tracks, sponsors and partners throughout the year for significant contributions and achievement in diversity. NASCAR will also be highlighting diverse drivers currently competing throughout the different levels of the sport.
