FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JULY 20, 1997
WEAVER PICKS UP FIRST SERIES VICTORY
Scott Weaver of Shelby, NC picked up his first NASCAR Goody's Dash Series win Saturday night in the American General Finance 125 at the Southern National Speedway in Kenly, NC. Weaver weaved his way from his eighth starting position to take over the lead from Claremont, NC's Robert Huffman on lap 71 and then led the final 54 circuits around the 4/10 mile high banks of Kenly. The 13 year veteran of the Series has had a roller coaster season in 1997 but he hit the winning combination in this event and you couldn't have found anyone any happier. "Man, I can't describe how good this feels." said Weaver in victory lane. "I suspect they'll be a big party tonight. You know, we've had some success over the years, led a lot of laps, and had some good moments, but I'll tell you, there's nothing like winning. I've really got to give the credit to the guys that work on this thing day and night. None of these guys get paid for anything, it's all volunteer work and I owe it all to them. They're just awesome." Scott's strongest challenge this evening came from four time winner in 1997, Mike Swaim Jr. who finally chased Weaver down by lap 116. But, as the two battled door to door in turn three, Swaim spun his number 28 Pontiac when he couldn't hang on to the bottom groove. "My tires were just gone." said Swaim. "I'd run so hard trying to catch Scotty, that by the time I got there, I just didn't have anything left." Swaim recovered to finish third behind Weaver and Winnsboro, SC's Will Hobgood who picked up his sixth top five finish this year. Pole sitter, Brian Sockwell and Hobgood, also took turns leading in the first half of this race, but it seemed nobody had anything for the streaking Weaver. The race was red flagged, briefly on lap 21, after Ricky Bryant, Monk Gulledge and Huffman got together in a chain reaction type accident in turn two which resulted in Bryant making heavy contact with the outside retaining wall and Gulledge piling in behind him. Bryant was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital for observation and some tests following the incident. He was diagnosed as having received a mild concussion and was later, released. The rookie challenger is expected to be able to start in the upcoming Charlotte 100 Wednesday evening, July 23 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Rounding out the top five in Saturday night's event behind Weaver, Will Hobgood and Swaim was rookie point leader, Charles Powell III and the younger member of the Hobgood clan, Jake Hobgood, brought his Wynn's Pontiac home in fifth. With nine races remaining in the 1997 schedule, Mike Swaim Jr. continues to hold a 140 point advantage over Will Hobgood in the championship battle, while Charles Powell III holds a slim seven point edge over Ricky Bryant in the Series Rookie of the Year race. -30-
