Las Vegas team school bus races

LAS VEGAS - "Rubbing is racing," but at Las Vegas Motor Speedway drivers caught in controversial accidents have been sentenced to a lesson in teamwork through school-bus races.

During the last NASCAR Weekly Racing Series event at LVMS' 3/8-mile paved oval, NASCAR Late Model drivers Scott Gafforini and Steve Anderson were black-flagged for making contact during a caution. At Saturday night's short-track event, these two competitors will be forced to work together as they compete on a team in school-bus races.

"This is a fun way to entertain the fans and watch our biggest rivals work with each other instead of against each other," said David Stetzer, director of short-track events at LVMS. "The drivers will be completely blindfolded. It will be the navigator's responsibility to guide the driver."

The six-lap obstacle course calls for one blindfolded driver and one navigator. After three laps they must switch roles to complete the course. The NASCAR Late Model team will compete against two Grand American Modified drivers, Randy Swalwell and C.J. Sherkenbach, who also were involved in a controversial racing accident at the last event.

The team that completes the obstacle course in the quickest time wins. However, every time the bus hits an obstacle, such as a life-size cardboard cut out of George Strait, the team will be penalized.

The race is scheduled for approximately 9 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m., and races start at 6 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and military and $2 for children 6-12. Children under 6 are free. Family four pack is $25.
