HUffman, Toyota look for fourth straight super speedway win in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 21, 2002) After winning the last three super speedway races, Robert Huffman hopes to make it four in a row as the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series joins the Winston Cup Series at Lowe's Motor Speedway this week. Huffman, and four other Toyota Celica racers, will take the green flag at the "Tom Johnson Camper Center/Easy Care Vehicle Lease Service Contracts 100" on Thursday, May 23.
"We've won twice in the past at Lowe's, and I'm looking forward to another good run this year too," Huffman commented. "The White House Apple Juice Celica ran great last year, and we had the lead towards the end until a broken steering arm took me out."
Huffman, of Claremont, N.C., goes into Charlotte second in Goody's Dash championship points after winning the opening two races this season at Daytona and Hardeeville. Including the 2001 season-ending race at the Nashville Super Speedway, the four-time Goody's Dash Series champion has won three out of the last five series events. Huffman reached victory circle at Lowe's in 1999 and 2000 on his way to the Goody's Dash Championship in each season.
Weaver Racing will field hometown racer Nick Pistone in the No. 77 Big Daddy's BBQ Sauce Toyota Celica. The Charlotte native is currently in 18th-place overall and in seventh-place for the Mag-Clip Rookie of the Year award. Pistone had his best finish of the season (8th) in the last race at Lonesome Pine Raceway.
Fellow rookie-of-the-year challenger Brandon Ward will be making his third start in the No. 11 Ram Fabrication Toyota Celica this Thursday. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native is currently in 12th-place overall and is third in the rookie-of-the-year chase. Ward finished fifth in last year's Goody's Dash stop at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
Tommy Spangler will join the Toyota ranks for the first time in the No. 75 Food Country/Highland Motorsports Toyota Celica. The Virginia native has numerous track championships over the last decade in Late Model Stock Cars and has served as a test driver for the Highland team. Spangler also raced part-time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 1996.
The Germain Automotive team will be switching from a Pontiac to the new No. 1 Germain Toyota Celica with Scott Krehling behind the wheel. Krehling has run partial seasons in the Goody's Dash series with the Germain team since 1998 and raced at the season-opening race in Daytona.
The 67-lap, 100-mile Goody's Dash race will run at 9 p.m. on Thursday, immediately following NASCAR Winston Cup qualifying. The "Tom Johnson Camper Center/Easy Care Vehicle Lease Service Contracts 100" will be televised tape delay on June 1, from 4-6 p.m. EDT on Fox Sports Net.
Toyota made its debut in the NASCAR Goody's Dash series at Daytona in 2000. The 27-year-old series is part of the NASCAR ladder system, designed to help promote and develop driver's skills at tracks as varied as Daytona, Charlotte and Bristol. Originally called "Baby Grands," Goody's Dash cars resemble a scaled-down version of a Winston Cup stock car, and each is equipped with a V6 powerplant.
