NASCAR AUTOZONE ELITE DIVISION, NORTHWEST SERIES PEPSI 125 NOTEBOOK
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 9, 2005)
THE NUMBERS GAME: Over 30 cars are looking to make the 24-car field for the Pepsi 125 at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho on Saturday, June 11 as part of the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Northwest Series. It is the second event in the 10-race season schedule for the Northwest Series.
TWICE AS NICE: Brandon Riehl picked up his first career NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division win on May 28 at Yakima (Wash.) Speedway and he wasted no time in earning his second. He collected the win last Sunday in the special combination event between the Midwest and Southwest Series at Colorado National Speedway. He made a thrilling pass on the outside of defending Midwest Series champion Justin Diercks with just six laps to go and won the event going away, beating Diercks to the line by 1.69 seconds.
IT'S ALL IN A NAME: If only Jeff Jefferson's parents had spelled his first name Geoff, then an amazing streak would be in tact. In the eight prior Northwest Series events at Magic Valley Speedway, Jefferson is the only winner whose first name does not begin with the letter "G". Greg Biffle won the inaugural event in 1997. Since then Garrett Evans has won four times and Gary Lewis twice. Evans is the defending Pepsi 125 champion.
STAR AMONG STARS: Biffle, an alumnus of the Northwest Series, leads all NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers with four wins this season. He earned his fourth victory last Sunday at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. In the championship point standings, he is currently in second place, 46 points behind Jimmie Johnson.
LEADER OF THE PACK: Lewis leads all Northwest Series drivers with three Bud Poles at Magic Valley Speedway. He also owns the track record for qualifying at the 1/3-mile oval with a lap time of 13.638 seconds, which translates to 87.901 mph.
THE ROOKIES: Seven drivers in the Northwest Series are currently enrolled in the Sunoco Rookie-of-the-Year program. Rookies will be able to take their nine best finishes in the 10-race season. Therefore, a poor outing can be overcome. The best finishing rookie coming out of Yakima was Mike Longton, who notched a seventh-place finish. In the rookie points race, Jim McVey, Jeff Barkshire and Marty Sokulski follow Longton.
