Southard Apparent Winner At ODS
Mike Southard from Nokesville Va. in the Try-It Racing Chevy breezed to his first win since June 2002 in at the Old Dominion Speedway in the 100-lap feature for the B/G Products NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Late Model Stock Cars. The win, which as of now is still unofficial pending post-race inspection, capped off the night in which he won the Manassas Dodge Dash For The Cash earlier in the evening.
Lindsay Chevrolet Qualifying was led by Dustin Storm, who picked up his 2nd pole of the season in his National Air Products Chevy. Storm circled the speedway in 15.649 seconds, just a tick quicker that Nathan Buttke's 15.665 lap. Point leader Jack Bailey qualified third with a lap of 15.721, followed by John Gunter (15.722), Richard Boswell Jr. (15.772), and Southard (15.774). Southard started from the pole in the "Dash" and led flag to flag. The 10-lap sprint was marred by an incident involving Gunter and Boswell, who collected each other for the third time in two weeks. Both cars were damaged, but repaired by the time the green flag fell on the 100-lap feature.
Southard and Storm led the 17-car field to the green flag, with Storm getting the edge going into turn one. Storm began to stretch his lead early and seemed to be the car to beat. But at the halfway point, Southard began to reel Storm in. With a bold move to the outside, Southard and Storm battled side-by-side for four laps, with Southard finally taking the lead for good on lap 75. From there on, it was Southard stretching his lead. He crossed the stripe nearly ten-car lengths in front of Storm at the end. Finishing third was Franklin Butler, who passed Bailey with just a few laps remaining. Bailey held on for fourth, while Boswell Jr. came home fifth. After post-race inspection, parts from Southard's car, along with fuel samples from the top four cars will be inspecting. The official rundown should be available early this week. The MARF Hard Charger Award courtesy of McGee Crane Rental and Convenience Car Care is also pending until final inspection.
The Redman Fleet Service Grand Stocks competed in twin 50-lap events. In the first event, Michael Hardin, last season's Rookie Of The Year, took home the win for his first time in 2005. Hardin was followed closely by point leader Chris Donnelly at the end. Les Miranda, who bounced back from some horrible luck the last two weeks, finished third after leading a good portion of the event early. Veteran Greg Compton held on for fourth, while Rusty Murphy rounded out the top five. In the second half of the twin bill, Murphy, who had started on the pole, led flag-to-flag to claim his first win in 2005, holding off Donnelly at the stripe. Hardin crossed the line in third, while Max Smith and Miranda rounded out the top five.
Ken Datesman returned to the Old Dominion Speedway for the third time, and made it three-for-three as he easily won the 50-lap feature for the Mini-Modifieds. Datesman led flag-to-flag, and beat Bill Briggs by nearly half a lap at the end. Keith Riley came home third, while Jeff Haase and Zack Quesenberry finished out the top five. Both drivers at the top of the points chase, leader Scott Roux and Mike Carte both developed mechanical problems. Neither driver was around at the finish.
The Allison Legacy Series visited the Old Dominion Speedway for the first time ever, with 14-year old Trevor Bayne taking the win with a bold pass with just four laps to go. Bayne took over the lead from early leader Jake Crumm, and held off Michael Cooper for the win.
Next Saturday night, the Late Models will compete in a 100-lap feature, along with a 100-lap event for the Grand Stocks. Also on the schedule is a 30-lap Mini-Modified feature, and the third appearance for the BDE Racing Series Mini Cups and Pro Trucks. Practice begins at 2 PM, qualifying starts at 4 PM, with racing action set for 7 PM.
