21-Year-Old Hogan Goes Back-To-Back In SES Competition
Third-Year Driver Shows His First Win Wasn't A Fluke
CONCORD, NC (May 10, 2004) -- NASCAR Southeast Series driver Jason Hogan said his first career SES win, which came just two weeks ago at Hickory Motor Speedway (NC) was "pretty sweet." Well, on Saturday night, he experienced something that was "even better" as he collected his second-straight SES win, this time he was victorious at Houston Motorsports Park in Texas.
"They always say the second one is harder, but it is pretty easy when you have a good car like I had on Saturday night," said Hogan of the win, which padded his point lead over Erik Darnell to 59 points. "I am glad to get the second one done and out of the way, too, because if anyone out there thought that first one was just a fluke, they now know this team is for real and we are here gunning to win every race."
There is no way anyone could think Hogan's season is a fluke. In three races this year, he has two victories and a second-place finish. Hogan, the 2002 SES Rookie of the Year, says there could very well be more victories yet to come.
"We will be a threat to win on all of the short tracks. There isn't one track that we go to that I don't truly believe we can win. I've always struggled at Greenville (the series' next race on June 5), but we are going to go in search of top-three and possible win there.
"Our goal was to build up as good of a points lead as we could heading into the speedway races just in case anything were to happen at those tracks. We have totally revamped our speedway program this year because we've really struggled at the big tracks in the past, so who knows what the season will hold.
"It is too bad we had to finish second at Nashville though, or we would be batting 1,000 this year."
Hogan qualified second at Houston but had to start fifth due to the series inversion. It took only laps until Hogan was up to third, where he rode while saving his equipment for a charge at the end.
"Once we got around Justin (Wakefield) for second, we just rode behind the local guy (Brandon Bendele) who was leading the race and putting up a strong showing. We were patient behind him for about 20 laps and then finally made our move. Once we got around him, that was pretty much it for the night.
"We had one late caution that let Jeff Fultz (second-place)catch up to us. He stuck with us for about three laps or so, but we could pull him on the long run."
The Houston track suited Hogan's driving style just fine. In fact, it was a lot like his home track of Lanier National Speedway in Georgia. Both tracks are 3/8-mile in length and have a reputation for being a "driver's track."
"It is a super nice track and does remind me a lot of Lanier, so I think I had a little bit of an advantage heading in there against everyone else," added Hogan. "The track has a lot of grip with the sealer they put down which made it easier on us. The fans in Houston were awesome, too. They were on their feet most of the night.
"I have to thank my entire crew, too. I wouldn't have been able to do as well as we have without those guys. Getting two wins in a row pumps them up just as much as it pumps me up. We have been talking about the win ever since we left the track."
Hogan will have some time off before the Greenville race on June 5. In the meantime, Jason is planning to compete with the Southern All Star Super Late Model Series on May 29 at his hometrack of Lanier.
