JR Norris Ready For Final Championship Quest
It's Down To the Wire For the NASCAR Southeast Series
CONCORD, NC (August 3, 2006) -- When a championship points battle is close, it always makes for some exciting racing. It makes it that much more exciting when the battle revolves around two races within days of each other. Going into next week's NASCAR Southeast Series finale, JR Norris is tied for the series points lead and has two races left in order to cement his first championship in the final year of the series.
"It's kind of sad to be having the last two races of the NASCAR Southeast Series coming up in the next week," said Norris. "I have been in the series for three years now and it's sad to see it go."
The grand finale of the series will occur within four days of each other. The Southeast Series, along with the NASCAR Midwest Series, will head to Nashville on Wednesday August 9th to compete in a combined event there, and then after that pack up and head to Greenville-Pickens Speedway on Saturday night, August 12th, to return to where the series began their final season.
"I like both Nashville and Greenville. I have run well at both of them, but I have a little bit better luck at Greenville than I do Nashville. Hopefully we will be able to run well at both places this time."
Norris was able to walk away with the trophy the last time the series paid a visit to Greenville-Pickens earlier this year. As he heads back, JR has high hopes to sweep the season's races at the track, but he is going to have a little bit more competition when they head back this time.
"The biggest thing about these next two races is that all of the Midwest Series guys will be there too, so it is going to make it that much harder to be able to win. You have to be smart about what you do and what positions you put yourself in.
"It very well could turn into some kind of battle. At the same time that they are running for points in their own series, they want to be able to take the trophy home. The Midwest guys want to take it home with them and we want to be able to take it home with us. We want to beat them."
There will be two different battles going on during these next two races for JR. The Midwest guys will be looking to crash the party and JR will be focusing on his friendly rivalry with Jason Hogan, who he is tied for the point lead with.
"It's going to be tough. It's going to be a mental deal I think more than a physical deal because you are going to have race those guys hard, but at the same time you have to be smart because you don't want to knock yourself out of your own championship.
"I would consider Hogan one of my best friends in racing," added Norris. "The thing about Hogan is that we know how one another races and the respect level between me and Jason is one of the things that keeps us friends after the race is over. We race each other hard and we race each other all the way until the last lap, but there is a lot of respect there. I think we probably race each other different than everybody else."
"But at the same time, when it is five laps to go, I don't care if you are my best friend, my Mom or my Dad, I am still going to do what I can to win the race."
The NASCAR Southeast Series event will be held at Music City Motorplex on Wednesday August 9th. It will be followed up with the Series finale at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on Saturday, August 12th.
