Davidson Claims Career-Best, Second-Place Finish at Kentucky
SES Rookie Uses Short Track Car on Superspeedway
Pearland, TX (June 21, 2004) -- Chris Davidson went to school on Friday night at the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway. The 26-year-old rookie found out what it's like to watch, follow and mimic a former series champion. He learned the importance of having a great team and good cars to triumph in the face of adversity. And with the learning he did on Friday, he parlayed it into a career-best, second-place finish in just his sixth career NASCAR Southeast Series race.
One week after destroying a car while being swept up into an accident at Nashville Superspeedway, Davidson and his Turner Motorsports team came back and scored a respectable run behind the wheel of their short track car.
"I'm pretty happy even though I think we could have finished one spot better," said Davidson. "We got swept up in someone else's mess last week at Nashville (Superspeedway), which will happen sometimes with the lapped cars. Therefore, we were a little behind the eight-ball because our speedway car was too hurt to use it this weekend, so we had to swap out the engines and put our speedway engine in the short track car.
"I am pretty excited that our short track car was that good, though, that we could swap it out and still come away with that good of a run. I'm excited to come back here again (September 18th) and use the speedway car. I know there is a bunch of stuff we didn't have in the short track car that we have in the speedway car that will make us that much better.
"And, of course, this is my first time at most of these tracks, so you can't complain too much when you finish second, especially to a guy like Jeff Fultz."
Davidson qualified third for the Kentucky 150, but fell back quickly at the start of the event.
"For some reason, we just couldn't get the car to go. We were actually back around seventh position at one point, but we slowly moved our way back up to the front. From there, it was just ride, conserve, stay out of trouble and be there at the end."
Davidson stayed huddled in third for much of the event before eventually moving into second after fellow competitor Erik Darnell fell off of the pace. Davidson lined up second to Fultz for the final green-white-checker, but had nothing for the former champion.
"(Fultz) was better through the center of the corner. We ran right with him, but we didn't have anything for him. When I saw the finish was going to be green-white-checker, I knew that if I was going to get him, I was going to have to beat him to turn one. Then going down the front stretch and up through the gears, I gained a little on him, but he had to make a mistake and that isn't something that Fultz is going to do very often. So I don't feel too bad finishing second to a guy like that."
The second-place finish moved Davidson to sixth in the point standings, just one point out of the top-five, and allowed him to keep his second-place standing in the Rookie of the Year battle.
The 26-year-old Davidson and the entire Turner Motorsports team have their eyes set on the 2004 NASCAR Southeast Series (formerly All Pro Series) Rookie of the Year and National Championship titles. The team will also run selected ROMCO and Super Late Model races throughout the 2004 season.
