Daivdson Wants Nothing Less Than A Win To Round Out Season
Rookie Scored A Second At Kentucky Back In June, But He Wants More
Pearland, TX (September 16, 2004) -- It's down to the last few races of the NASCAR Southeast Series season for Chris Davidson and his Turner Motorsports team. As a rookie in the series, Davidson has two top-five finishes and is currently seventh in the point standings. That would be impressive for most rookie racers. But Davidson and his team are perfectionists and they want to win. They're not satisfied with their season and they are working hard to get even better results.
"We've been lacking a little bit in the Southeast Series. Finishing sixth, seventh or eighth is not where we need to be. It's good, but this team is really good," said Davidson. "We're going to do whatever it takes to win. The last two nights that we've worked on the car, we saw the sun come up."
Although one might question his sanity at being unhappy with these results, nobody can question the commitment shown by Davidson and his team as they get ready for the 1,100 mile trip from their shop in Texas to the Kentucky Speedway.
"Our truck driver left the shop at 3 am Wednesday morning," said Davidson. "We'll leave tonight because we don't need to worry about log books. Today we got the engine for our Nashville car (the next and final event after Kentucky) and we're getting a head start on that already. We'll get some sleep on the road and be rested for the race this weekend."
Davidson hopes that his team's efforts pay off in this weekend's race. He finished second in the spring event at the 1.5-mile track and would love to improve by one more position at the finish of this event.
"We've worked hard on our Kentucky car and the short track car for Nashville," said Davidson. "I hope that it shows. We're racing against teams with two or three years of experience and going to new tracks, but J.R. (Norris) is contending for the championship as a rookie. He's got good equipment and is an excellent driver, but he shows that it can be accomplished."
"I'm confident about going back to Kentucky. We had a third place car last time and were handed a second-place finish when (Erik) Darnell ran out of gas. We've figured out what we were missing last time and I think that we did our homework. But I'm sure that the other teams have as well."
The Turner Motorsports team is already looking ahead to next season.
"We'll be back in the Southeast Series and we'll be definitely aiming for the championship," said Davidson. "We're looking forward to next season. We've been struggling a little bit on the short tracks this year and we'll get it turned around for next year. We don't get to do much testing being this far away, but we'll do some this winter. We'll work harder in the shop and be that much further ahead next year."
The 26-year-old Davidson and the entire Turner Motorsports team have their eyes set on the 2004 NASCAR Southeast Series (formerly All Pro Series) Rookie of the Year and National Championship titles. The team will also run selected ROMCO and Super Late Model races throughout the 2004 season.
