Gatorade All Pro Series, Nascar Touring Drivers Make Second Superspeedway Appearance Of 2001 At Kentucky Speedway
DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. (July 27 2001) - The Gatorade All Pro Series, NASCAR Touring will accomplish another milestone when they return to Kentucky Speedway on August 11 for The 84 WHAS 150. For the first time in series history, Gatorade All Pro drivers will be competing at the same facility in conjunction with the Indy Racing League (IRL) cars.
Three series drivers looking forward to returning to this 1.5-mile speedplant are drivers who have been very dominant at this track, Brian Smith, Jeff Fultz and Wayne Anderson. Smith, Mooresville, N. C., set the qualifying mark for this series in 2000, then broke his own record in the June 2001 event at the speedway. He enters this event 11th in the national points standing recording one Bud Pole start, one top five and five top ten finishes in eight of nine series starts in 2001.
"Kentucky Speedway has been a good track for this Pontiac Grand Prix," commented Smith. "Even running a restrictor plate, there is just something about this track that makes me feel so comfortable." In two races here Smith has finished 13th and fourth. Fultz, originally from Cincinnati, competed here in 2000 and in June 2001.
In both events he earned an outside front row starting position. The race in June was a battle between Smith and Fultz as they exchanged the lead for the first three laps before Smith finally took the point. But in the end, Fultz proved to be the dominant car leading 66 of 100 laps on his way to his first stop in victory lane in 2001.
"We needed to make a good showing in June with this C & C Boiler/Cleaver Brooks team," said Fultz from his raceshop. "They have been such solid sponsors of this Jon Craig led team and it was important to be in victory lane for them. Last year we started well but didn't end well at Kentucky.
In June our car was so good I could put it anywhere on the track." "I really like this track which I consider my hometrack," continued Fultz.
"My family is in Cincinnati and now that I have moved to Mooresville, N. C. to work on the NASCAR Winston Cup team they do not see their grandkids very often. So coming here is very special."
Anderson has a score to settle at this track. In 2000 he took the checkered flag but his car failed post race inspection and was relegated to last place with no points or posted awards. In June he tried desperately to beat Fultz, finishing second just .212 seconds behind the winner. Roger Parker of London, Ky. is another driver anxious to return to this venue. He made his first superspeedway series start in the June event finishing 14th after starting 28th in the 40-car field. Parker is competing for the Wireway/Husky Corp Rookie-of-the-Year title where he stands fourth in the standings and trails leader Charlie Bradberry by only seven points.
He ranks 19th in the Gatorade All Pro Series, NASCAR Touring national points standing. The Gatorade All Pro Series, NASCAR Touring is one of nine NASCAR Touring Series that blanket the United States, bringing special events to many NASCAR Weekly Racing Series tracks and some NASCAR superspeedways and road courses.
NASCAR Touring Series can provide a competitor with an entire career, or they can provide valuable experience to competitors moving through the NASCAR ranks. Corporate sponsors make significant contributions to NASCAR Touring Series point funds. The sponsors include R. J. Reynolds, Anheuser-Busch, Featherlite Trailers, Goody's Headache Powders, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Raybestos Brakes and RE/MAX International, Incorporated.
