BURT MYERS WINS NASCAR WHELEN SOUTHERN MODIFIED TOUR 150 AT CARAWAY SPEEDWAY
ASHEBORO, N.C. (April 9, 2005) - Burt Myers, of Walnut Cove, N.C., won the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150 April 9 at Caraway Speedway, his first win in the all-new NASCAR-sanctioned Tour. Myers, a two-time track champion at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, charged from the fourth position at the halfway point of the 150-lap race, to take the lead over Jay Foley, of Stuart, Va., on lap 95. Foley chased Myers over the remaining laps before he finished second, followed by New Jersey's Brian Crammer in third and Michael Clifton, of Walkertown, N.C. in fourth. Bobby Hutchens, of Lexington, N.C., finished fifth.
For Myers, the victory was a vast improvement over his last appearance at Caraway, when he finished 14th in the Whelen Southern Modified Tour season opener on March 26. Myers says his No. 1 team re-worked their race car to improve their performance this time around, and even used a borrowed set of shocks from a competing race team.
"We changed everything on this car," Myers said. "We moved lead, we moved the battery. We put three different sets of shocks on it and during practice today and the car wasn't too bad but the longer we ran, the worse it got."
Before the start of the 150-lap race, Myers' team borrowed a set of shock absorbers from David Riggs' No. 69 team and the change made all the difference.
"We had a heck of a race car tonight," Myers said.
While the opening race of the Whelen Southern Modified Tour featured an invasion of sorts, from drivers from the northeastern-based NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, this event was left to the Southern Modified regulars as the Whelen Modified Tour campaigned a Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway. Two northeastern-based drivers, however, did race at Caraway and are planning to continue with the Whelen Southern Modified Tour. Brian Crammer, of Howell, N.J., finished third while Alex Hoag, of Bath, N.Y., was 14th.
The Whelen Southern Modified Tour will return to Caraway Speedway April 16, before taking an 11-week hiatus. Following its early summer break, the Tour will continue its' inaugural season July 1 at Caraway.
