NASCAR WHELEN SOUTHERN MODIFIED TOUR HEADS TO SOUTHERN NATIONAL RACEWAY PARK FOR FIRST TIME THIS SATURDAY NIGHT

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 3, 2006) -- There are 10 races down and two to go and the battle for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour championship is about as good as it gets. Reigning champion Junior Miller leads Tim Brown by only nine points (1,776-1,767). The next round of Whelen Southern Modified Tour action will take place this Saturday at Southern National Raceway Park in Kenly, N.C. in the Night of Modifieds 150.

Miller and Brown aren't exactly heading into foreign territory in the title fight as the duo has combined to win a staggering 20 Modified championships (Miller 14, Brown 6) through the years. The two championship leaders are more than 150 points ahead of Burt Myers who sits third in the standings.

"These last two races are going to be exciting and we're just going to keep doing what we've been doing all year long," said Brown, a native of Cana, Va. "It's going to come down to these last two races and I know Junior and I want to beat each other on the track and not win the championship because one of us has trouble.

"That's the way it should be. I don't want Junior to have problems and just hand me this championship and I'm sure he feels the same way. Our performance out on the track this year has been almost identical and that's what the points system is all about is rewarding consistency."

If there is one thing that has been consistent about the first 10 races of the 2006 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour season is Miller's consistent visits to Victory Lane as he has won five times.

Miller hit the .500 mark last Saturday night with his victory at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway with Brown just behind in second. That moved Miller back into the lead in the championship race over Brown who headed into the famed Hickory short track with a mere one point lead.

Miller, a Pine Hall, N.C. native, knows the importance of the final two races of the 2006 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour season.

"We got in a couple of wrecks which put us a little bit behind as far as the points go, but we've got back to where we need to be," Miller said. "We had a good car at Hickory and were good enough to win there last Saturday night. Hopefully, we'll be able to win these next two races so we can let the points take care of themselves and we won't have to worry about it.

"The way I look at it is if we can win these last two races we will win the championship. It's all going to come down to the end and I'm looking forward to it. It's all pretty simple because if I win and Tim runs second -- I'm going to win it. If Tim wins and I run second -- he's going to beat me."

Brown's consistency this year should not be overlooked as he has one victory to his credit -- at Martinsville -- to go along with four runner-up finishes, including his second-place finish last Saturday night at Hickory.

"I had a great car at Hickory but it just wasn't meant to be," Brown said. "Junior got by me because of lapped traffic and I couldn't get back by him. He was in a position to where he could kind of pick and choose where he wanted to go. To finish second again is disappointing, but I've got to think positive because there were 26 cars in the race and I was able to beat all but one of them.

"It's kind of disappointing though because we as a team work so hard and put a lot of effort into this. I don't want people to think that I'm a sore loser, but it's hard to be that good and fall short of our goals when you have a car that's capable of winning."
