TIM BROWN WRITES OFF ROCKY START, BUT LOOKS FOR SUCCESS AS NASCAR WHELEN SOUTHERN MODIFIED TOUR HEADS TO MOTOR MILE SPEEDWAY

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 26, 2005) -- One of the closest championship points races in NASCAR continues as Modified racing returns to Motor Mile Speedway this Saturday, with the running of the Adams Construction/Star Country 150 featuring the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.

Points leaders Junior Miller and Burt Myers are separated by just 24 points, the closest points margin among any of NASCAR's eight regional racing series. While these two Southern Modified stars -- who both reside near Winston-Salem, N.C. -- battle for top honors, one Virginia driver is looking forward to racing close to home at the Radford, Va. track. Tim Brown, who resides about 55 miles south of Radford, in Cana, Va., says Saturday's race will be a great event for the fans.

"Motor Mile is a beautiful race track -- awesome for the fans," said Brown, who has raced there in Vintage Modifieds and other classes. "The fans will get a really good show up there. I'm looking forward to it -- it's probably one of the nicest race tracks that we'll get to go to this year."

After a rocky start to the season, Brown is also hoping to improve as much as possible in the championship point standings. In the March 26 season-opener at Caraway Speedway, Brown's own No. 83 race car was not ready and he borrowed another team's car for the event. Brown did qualify for the race, but the team was unable to start due to mechanical troubles with the borrowed car. Brown was credited with a 22nd-place result and began his season with a 63-point deficit to current points leader Junior Miller.

Brown is now ranked fourth, 152 points out of the lead and 34 points behind third-place Brian Loftin.

"I just wish we could've made the first race,' said Brown. "If we could've just run that first race, I'm pretty sure we could've gained a lot more points, so we would have been right there battling for the championship. Hopefully, this winter, we can put some stuff together to come back and be competitive all year next year. I'm not giving up yet."

After the poor showing in the season-opener, Brown has been competitive in every race. He's recorded five top-five's and seven top-10 finishes since leaving Caraway in March. The six-time Bowman Gray Stadium track champion says he has full confidence in his team -- and his car.

"It's a new car for us this year," said Brown. "It's probably the nicest piece I've ever had. It's a pretty awesome race car and I'm looking forward to taking it [to Motor Mile]."

Motor Mile Speedway has hosted Southern Modified racing in the past, with the former Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams (SMART) Tour, on four occasions from 2000-04. Loftin, who is coming off a victory last Saturday night at Caraway, won the SMART Tour's most recent visit to Motor Mile in 2004. Other past race winners have included Burt Myers (2002), Jay Hedgecock (2001) and Eddie Flemke (2000).

Saturday's event gets underway with practice from 1:15-2:45 p.m. and Bud Pole qualifying at 4:15. The Adams Construction/Star Country 150 is set to take the green flag at 7:00 p.m.
