JUNIOR MILLER WINS SATURDAY AT SOUTHERN NATIONAL RACEWAY PARK TO CLINCH NASCAR WHELEN SOUTHERN MODIFIED TOUR TITLE
KENLY, N.C. (Oct. 21, 2006) -- Two NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour drivers -- Tim Brown and Junior Miller -- headed into Saturday night's 'Night of Modifieds 100' at Southern National Raceway Park as two men with a mission and knowing that only one competitor would leave the track with the 2006 Whelen Southern Modified Tour championship.
When all was said and done, it was Miller winning both the race and the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour championship as Brown dominated the race until he was slowed by cars trying to stay on the tail-end of the lead lap and Miller swept by him to take the lead -- and ultimately his second straight Tour title by six points over Brown who was forced to settle for second in the race as well as the season long championship.
"I knew I had a good car when we started the race and I was just kind of riding around then I had to start running hard to catch up with Tim because he was trying to run away with it," Miller said. "Tim kind of fooled me a little bit because he had a lot better car than I thought he was going to have. I had to run my tail off to beat him and Tim put up a heck of a battle. He had a good race car and he made me work to beat him."
Brown, naturally, wasn't too thrilled at the turn of events that allowed Miller to slip by him with 17 laps remaining.
"We've always got next year," Brown said.
When asked if Miller felt sorry for Brown -- who led the championship battle heading into the race by a mere four points -- for coming so close but yet so far, Miller replied:
"I don't feel sorry for him because he did what he had to do tonight," Miller said. "He drew the pole and led the most laps. He did his job so I don't feel sorry for him. We were a team on a mission and we pulled it off."
Rounding out the top-five behind Miller and Brown were Burt Myers, L.W. Miller and Chuck Hossfeld.
The Night of Modifieds 100 was originally scheduled to be held Saturday, Oct. 7, but rain showers hit the area just prior to the start of the race so the date was rescheduled for Saturday night. L.W. Miller won the Bud Pole but it was Brown who started the race from the pole position following the draw-redraw. Brown used that to his advantage by jumping out to take the early lead with a mirror full of Burt Myers, L.W. Miller and Brian King just past the race's one-third mark, while Junior Miller was mired back in fifth.
At the halfway mark, Brown was still in the lead over Burt Myers with a hard-charging Junior Miller had made his way up to third.
"The traffic didn't get out of the way and I'm glad that they didn't," Miller said. "Then I got caught in the traffic there at the end of the race and it ended up almost costing me the race. When I got out of the gas Tim bumped into me just a little and then he lost his momentum by not spinning me out."
