SOUTH BOSTON, VA. -- Scott Worley of Long Island, Va. scored his third career Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division victory in impressive style Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.
The 150-lap race was the featured attraction of the 3M Night NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series program.
Worley started sixth in the 18-car field, and slowly picked off his challengers before taking the lead on lap 126 and holding on the remainder of the way to take the checkered flag first. Worley, as he has done throughout the season, used the high side of the track to make his passes and work his way to the front of the field.
"It was a wild ride," Worley said. "I had been wanting to earn a win for such a long time." Worley had earlier said that his first two Late Model wins were "sort of handed to me."
Worley grabbed the second-place spot on the track on lap 91 with a pass of Jason Dickerson of Ruckersville, Va. He then set his sights on David Triplett, Jr. of Durham, N.C., who was three-fourths of a straightaway ahead at the time.
Worley closed in on Triplett by trimming nearly a car length per lap off of his advantage.
Triplett started third in the event and took the lead on lap 38 with a pass of Dickerson. Triplett wound up second in the race, while Owen Miller of Emporia, Va. roared from a 12th-place starting position to finish in third place.
Justin Johnson of Roxboro, N.C., who collected his first win of the season last week, finished fourth after starting 11th and Jonathan Cash of Oxford, N.C. rounded out the top five competitors.
Ryan Rhodes of Sanford, N.C. secured sixth-place, while Peyton Sellers of Danville, Va. finished seventh and David Quackenbush of Lorton, Va. placed eighth.
Division point leader Drew Herring of Benson, N.C. garnered a ninth-place showing to maintain an eight-point edge over Sellers in the championship chase, while Brandon Butler of Petersburg, Va. rounded out the top 10. Butler was one lap down at the close of the race.
The race was slowed by just one caution period, which took place on lap 11. The green flag stayed out the rest of the way when it was displayed to the drivers for the restart on the 18th circuit.
Deac McCaskill of Raleigh, N.C. earned the pole position for the race with a qualifying lap of 15.920. McCaskill set the early pace, however, his engine went sour prior to the restart of the race and he had to head to the pits. McCaskill wound up placing 14th.
Snow scores third straight win, pulls into tie with Bailey in Limited Sportsman Division standings
Justin Snow of Danville, Va. started from the pole position, avoided two-early race accidents and then sped to his third consecutive triumph in the 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.
Snow's victory, coupled with a runner-up finish by Jonathan Bailey of Keysville, Va., created a tie atop the division's season-long championship chase between Snow and Bailey.
Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. finished third in the 13-car field, while Brian Pembleton of Amelia, Va. placed fourth and was the final driver on the lead lap.
Eddie DeClue of Butner, N.C., who was one lap down at the end, rounded out the top five drivers in the event.
Several contenders were eliminated from contention in two multi-car collisions that happened before the second lap of the race had been run.
Outside pole sitter Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. was involved in a six-car accident on the first circuit, while three other cars were involved in a wreck shortly after the green flag flew for the first time.
Baker makes late pass for the lead, holds to win 30-lap race for Pure Stock Division
Brandon Baker of Durham, N.C. slipped past Rodney Pennington of Stem, N.C. on lap 27 and held on for the last three circuits to score a victory in the 30-lap race for the Virginia Army National Guard Pure Stock Division.
Baker started the event from the 13th slot in the 19-car field, but managed to roll to the front.
Pennington moved into the lead position on the fifth lap after working past front row starter Courtney Crosby of Scottsburg, Va.
Joey Throckmorton of Scottsburg, Va. finished third in the race that was slowed by a trio of cautions and was followed in the top five by Nick Igdalsky of South Boston, Va. and Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C.
Watkins' fifth-place run in the event enabled him to maintain his lead in the division's point standings.
Darrell Lacks scores win in Southern Vintage Modified
Darrell Lacks rolled to a victory in the 25-lap Southern Vintage Modified event.
Randy Smith, who won on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval two weeks ago, finished second in the 11-car field and was followed by Ben Franklin in third place.
Jeff Tate placed fourth in the caution-free race, while Bill Lacks rounded out the top five finishers.
