The racing season at St. Augustine Speedway will come to a dramatic conclusion in 1999 with the running of the first ever TOP GUN CHALLENGE. The TOP GUN CHALLENGE is a unique competition format that will incorporate both on-track competition and a final competition that will take the competitors away from the race track and place them in antique WW II warbird trainers courtesy of North American Top Gun, Inc. for the ultimate showdown, an inflight dog fight in the skies over St. Augustine. It's the most exciting way that I can imagine to end what has already been a very successful season," said Speedway General Manager Louis Smith. "To the best of my knowledge, nothing like this has ever been done before." "We're very excited about our association with Bruce Moore and the folks of North American Top Gun and the unique facet that they are able to bring to this competition." North American Top Gun, Inc. is a St. Augustine-based company that offers the public the opportunity to fly vintage WW II aircraft from any of their several base locations around the country. The AT-6 "Texans" used by N.A.T.G. are scheduled to be in St. Augustine from Nov. 20 through the end of the year. The on-track portion of the competition will take place over the final six weeks of the St. Augustine Speedway schedule beginning on Sept. 25 and culminating on Oct. 30. Under the rules of this challenge series, the six NASCAR racing divisions will be broken into two tiers. The first tier will be comprised of Late Models, Snap-On Sportsman and Rick's Muffler Modifieds who will compete against each other using a handicap scoring system that will allow all of the competitors in each division to be ranked individually within the group, or tier, while actually racing against only the competitors in their respective divisions. The second tier will be comprised of Thunder Trucks, Mini Stocks and Hobby Stocks who will be pitted against each other using the same competition index scoring system. At the end of the six-week, four-event competition, a top gun challenger will emerge from each tier. Those two representatives will square off against each other in what is being described as the single most unique competition finale ever conceived to determine the ultimate 1999 TOP GUN. The inflight portion of the competition will coincide with the speedway's annual awards banquet on Nov. 19. The 1999 TOP GUN will be crowned that same evening during a special awards presentation at the banquet to be held in the hanger of the inflight competition sponsor, North American Top Gun, Inc. with the warbirds in proximity.
