Jacksonville, NC (June 9, 2001) Wilson North Carolina native, Cam Strader, stole the show Saturday night in the running of the United Rental/Global Systems, Inc. 150 at the Coastal Plains Speedway.
Strader served notice early that the Wesson Cooking Oil-Peter Pan Peanut Butter Mercury Cougar was strong, by winning the Bud Pole Award at an average speed of 87.607 mph. He started from the fourth position, after the top four were shuffled in the pre-race inversion, a standard format for the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series.
On lap 17, Strader took the lead from Justin Hobgood, and started his assault on the 20-car field. When the caution flag flew on lap 44, Strader led the majority of the field into the pits for a fuel stop.
Eric VanCleef inherited the lead by staying on the speedway during the caution period. On the restart, VanCleef held on to the lead for six laps, but Strader's Mercury would soon prove to be too much. As the two drivers entered turn one, Strader drove to the inside of VanCleef, and completed the pass as the pair exited turn two.
By lap 97, Strader had stretched his lead to 20 car lengths over second-place Justin Hobgood. Hobgood was involved in a fierce battle throughout the night with his brother Jake Hobgood and Robert Huffman.
On lap 120, Strader had most of the field a lap down including Roger Sawyer, who is currently second to Strader in the points standings.
It appeared that Strader would cruise to the victory, but Tim Nichols spun his machine in turn one on lap 139 bringing out the final caution of the evening.
Strader took the green flag for the restart with Justin and Jake Hobgood in hot pursuit, but once again Strader flexed the muscle in his machine and motored away from the brothers Hobgood to take the checkered flag.
"I have an awesome team led by crew chief, Barry Owen and great engines prepared by Jan Smith," said the excited winner.
"The Wesson team had this car dialed in tonight on those Goodyear Tires and the cooler it got, the faster the car ran. I am so excited that we are having this much success so early in the season for all of our sponsors."
Strader led 128 of the 150-lap event that lasted 54 minutes and 25 seconds. There were three lead changes among three drivers, and four caution periods for a total of 26 laps. Only five cars were on the lead lap at the conclusion of the event.
