Michels Rips Quick Lap to Score First Career Bud Pole
ERIE, COLO. (July 30, 2005) Rip Michels from San Fernando, Calif. scored his first career NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Southwest Series Bud Pole Award with a quick lap of 16.243 seconds/82.005 mph around the wide 3/8-mile paved oval of Colorado National Speedway located outside Denver, Colorado. Burney Lamar, Auggie Vidovich, Nick Lynch, and series point leader Jim Pettit II rounded out the top five qualifiers for the 150-lap United Power/Touchstone Energy sponsored event.
"It feels great to finally qualify up front," Michels said. "Our team has worked so hard this year but has had some bad luck. I hope this is a sign of things to come."
One one thousands of second separated Michels from second qualifier Lamar and Vidovich who had identical times. After qualifying was concluded, Michels drew a ten-car invert putting local hero Bruce "The Moose" Yackey on the pole with Eddy McKean outside row one.
