Featherlite Southwest Series sets 1999 schedule
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 6, 1999) The Featherlite Southwest Series, a part of the NASCAR Touring Division, will embark on one of the most ambitious schedules in series history in 1999, NASCAR officials said when announcing an 18-race schedule. The series, which will begin its 14th season this weekend with a Sunday afternoon event at Tucson (Ariz.) Raceway Park, will visit two new venues during the 18-race jaunt through five states. "This schedule will be among the most exciting in Featherlite Southwest Series history," said Dennis Huth, NASCAR vice president for administration. Two tracks -- Irwindale Speedway in Irwindale, Calif., and Rocky Mountain Raceways, near Salt Lake City, Utah -- will be new to the series. "These additions to the series schedule give our corporate partners and team sponsors new opportunities," Huth said. The variety of racing venues for which the Featherlite Southwest Series is noted continues with the 1999 schedule. The season will begin on the 3/8-mile oval at Tucson Raceway Park and will race on tracks the same size at Cajon Speedway (El Cajon, Calif.), Colorado National Speedway (Dacono, Colo.), Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Rocky Mountain Raceways (West Valley, Utah). Cajon Speedway holds the distinction of being the only track to host a Featherlite Southwest Series race in every year of the series' existence. The 1/3-mile oval at Madera (Calif.) Speedway will be the shortest venue the series races on in 1999 and one of the most competitive. The series will visit two tracks measuring half a mile in 1999. They are Mesa Marin Raceway (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway. The series' drivers will exhibit their road racing skills twice in 1999, once at Sears Point Raceway (Sonoma, Calif.) and once in the second annual Los Angeles Street Race. The biggest track the Series will race on in 1999 will be the mile oval at Phoenix International Raceway. Source: NASCAR Online
