Holmes Leads Southwest Series Sweep in Qualifying at Infineon
SONOMA, CALIF. (June 24, 2005) Eric Holmes of Escalon, Calif. scored his fourth career Bud Pole Award in NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Southwest Series competition Friday afternoon to lead a Southwest Series sweep of the top five positions in qualifying for the the Blue Lizard Australian Suncream "200".
Southwest Series championship contender Burney Lamar of nearby W. Sacramento, Calif. clocked in second quick, with M.K. Kanke, Greg Pursley, and David Gilliland atop the speed charts. Holmes' lap of 1:17.132 seconds/90.546 mph was fastest of fourty-eight drivers who attempted to qualify for one of 42 starting positions in Saturday's race.
Other notable qualifiers include Boris Said (8th), Travis Kvapil (11th), Kyle Busch (13th), three-time Southwest Series Infineon winner Jim Inglebright (15th), and Michael Waltrip (25th). Waltrip destroyed his car during qualifying after spinning to avoid another car. Waltrip and his crew will have a long night ahead of them to prepare the car for the race.
Spencer Clark, Tyler McQuarrie, Tom Hubert, Tim Woods, Chris Evans, and Tim Spurgeon all failed to qualify. The Blue Lizard Australian Suncream "200" is set to take the green flag at 1:00 pm PST on Saturday afternoon at the picturesque Infineon Raceway located in Sonoma, Calif.
