Possible NASCAR Rule Change Gets Supports From Texas Motor Speedway

FORT WORTH-DALLAS (July 12, 2004) - Texas Motor Speedway officials support what appears to be a move by NASCAR to help ensure NEXTEL Cup Series races no longer end under a caution period.

"NASCAR deserves high marks for working to develop a plan to make sure the races don't end under the caution," said Eddie Gossage, president of Texas Motor Speedway. "NASCAR is the sport of the people and we have to listen to the fans. The fans have told us that they want the races to end with a green flag finish. NASCAR has long distinguished itself from the other sports by listening to its fans. They deserve credit here again."

Several recent races have finished under the yellow flag, disappointing fans in the stands and millions watching on television.

"You have to listen to the fans for certain things," said points leader Jimmie Johnson in today's Indianapolis Star. "This is something they want to see."

NASCAR president Mike Helton was also quoted by the Indianapolis Star regarding plans to promote a green flag finish. "We're thinking very strongly about it. It has been on the table before, but recently we have talked about it more seriously. I'd say it has a good deal of momentum."

NASCAR officials have not revealed how the plan will work. An announcement may be forthcoming soon.

"We like how the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series finishes its races," said Gossage. "They guarantee a green-white-checker finish. That may not work at the restrictor plate race tracks, but we think this works very well elsewhere. We'll be standing by to see what NASCAR does but we're very excited about the likelihood of a change."
