NASCAR GRAND NATIONAL DIVISION, WEST SERIES POST-RACE NOTES -- FONTANA CALIFORNIA 125, AUG. 11

* Bowles wins second straight road race -- Jason Bowles (No. 22 Sunrise Ford/Turbo Torq Ford) won his second straight road course race in the NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series with a victory in the California 125 at California Speedway in Fontana, Calif., on Saturday, Aug. 11. It gave his car owner, Bob Bruncati, a sweep of the three series road course races this season. NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series regular David Gilliland drove the same car as a team entry to victory at Sonoma in June and Bowles took the win in that car at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, prior to winning the inaugural NASCAR road course event at California Speedway.

* Hauling home the hardware -- In addition to winning the race, Jason Bowles won nearly all the special awards at Fontana. The 24-year-old series rookie from Ontario, Calif., captured his first career Bud Pole Award with a qualifying lap of 119.420 mph around the 2.4-mile track. He won the Sunoco Rookie of the Race Award, as the top finishing rookie, for the sixth time this season. Bowles also won the Aero Exhaust Lap Leader Award for leading the most laps. In addition, he won the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award. His win followed a 16th-place finish at Monroe. Featherlite presents the award at each event to the driver who improves the most finishing positions from the previous event.

* Podium finish for Mayhew -- David Mayhew (No. 21 Golden Gate Petroleum/RCR Chevrolet) scored a career-best third-place finish at Fontana in only his second race for Jim Offenbach's Golden Gate Racing Team and his sixth career series race overall.

* Strong run for Martin -- Thomas Martin (No. 15 Dutra Group/Toy-Ondas Chevrolet) had a strong run at Fontana for the Jack Sellers Racing team. Martin, making only his sixth career series start, ran as high as second place just past the midway point of the race and eventually finished 12th -- matching his career-best mark.

* David continues to lead championship battle -- Mike David (No. 2 Bennett Lane Winery Ford) entered Fontana needing only to finish 11th or better in the two remaining races to clinch the series championship. The Modesto, Calif., competitor finished 11th on the road course. It trimmed his lead in the championship standings to 95 points -- 1,848 to 1,753 -- over Mike Duncan (No. 9 Lucas Oil/Ron's Rear Ends Chevrolet), who finished fifth. David can win his first series title by finishing 22nd or better in the season finale at Altamont Motorsports Park near Tracy, Calif., on Sept. 15.

* Tight battle among top five drivers -- The battle among the top five drivers in the championship standings is extremely tight heading into the final event of the season, with 37 points separating the four drivers in second through fourth. As the runner-up with 1,753 points, Mike Duncan has a 34-point lead over Johnny Borneman (No. 8 Twisted X Boots/Red Line Oil Ford) with 1,719. But Borneman only has a one-point lead over Brian Ickler (No. 16 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet) with 1,718. And Jason Bowles is just two points back from him, with 1,716.
