BOWLES EXTENDS TOP-10 STREAK IN NASCAR CAMPING WORLD EAST-WEST COMBINATION RACE
Talented American reduces gap to first place in championship standings to 16 points
NEWTON, IOWA (May 17, 2009) -- Jason Bowles continued to show why he is one of the drivers to watch in the NASCAR Camping World West Series on Sunday (May 17), earning a top-10 finish at the Iowa Speedway. Going up against the best drivers from across the country, as well as a race-winning NASCAR Sprint Cup race pilot in the Long John Silver's 200 NASCAR Camping World Series East-West combination race, the California briefly led, before securing a ninth place result.
One of the premier events on the NASCAR Camping World West Series calendar, the on-track action at the Iowa Speedway commenced on Saturday (May 16) with a late afternoon practice session. Bowles, piloting the No. 6 Sunrise Ford/Oakley/Joe Gibbs Racing Oil/GS 610/RPM 12/Justice Brothers/Bell/Ford, immediately showed he was ready to challenge for top honors, turning the fourth fastest time.
Returning to the 0.875-mile oval day later for race day, the former karting and formula car standout continued his strong outing. After posting the ninth quickest time in the morning practice session, Bowles remained a top-10 driver in single-car qualifying, eventually earning a fourth row starting position via the eighth fastest time.
After a short break, all 37 drivers taking part in the Long John Silver's 200 were back in their cockpits. For the Bowles, the goal was not only to challenge for the race win, but also earn valuable championship points. Enjoying a clean start, the Californian did just that. Fighting for positions within the top-10 throughout the 200-lap affair, Bowles was one of only three drivers to lead a lap, eventually crossing the stripe in ninth place. With the result, his fifth consecutive top-10 finish to start the season, Bowles exited the East-West combination race second in the NASCAR Camping World West Series standings, 16 points back of first.
"It was a great points day for us, so I am pleased with that for sure," stated Bowles. "Our speed was good during the second half of the race when we were able to lead for a few laps and run second fro quite sometime, but we ended up having a left front tire with cords showing and made the car real tight, so on the last caution we came in and changed it. I am happy with everything from the weekend, the team gave me a great car and we showed we have the speed to run with the best from the East. Now I am just looking forward to Roseburg to continue our chase for the championship."
Bowles and the rest of his Sunrise Ford crew now have brief break, before returning to action on June 6th at Douglas County Speedway in Oregon, for Round Six of the NASCAR Camping World West Series, the Toyota/BI-MART Firecracker 150. The Californian title contender finished third in last year's edition of the race on the 0.5-mile oval.
