WS: Mesa Marin: Race notes, standings

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - David Gilliland held off a hard-charging Mike Duncan to win the NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series Lucas Oil 150 at Mesa Marin Raceway on Saturday night.

Although Duncan had dominated much of the 150-lap event, Gilliland took advantage of a series of late-race pit stops to move to the front and take the lead 15 laps from the finish. Duncan charged after Gilliland, but was not able to beat him to the checkered flag.

It was the first career series victory for Gilliland - whose father, Butch, won three series races on the high-banked, half-mile Bakersfield track.

Scott Lynch finished third, followed by Scott Gaylord and Mike David.

The race was the second of 13 events on schedule for the series in 2004.
