Jonathon Gomez Backs up Round one with Strong Fourth Place Performance at Phoenix
TWIN FALLS, IDAHO (April 10, 2010) Jonathon Gomez, driver of the Century Boatland/Heritage Cattle Co. Chevrolet from Twin Falls, Idaho backed up his opening night performance by finishing fourth at Phoenix (AZ) International Raceway Thursday evening in round two of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series.
Gomez qualified a disappointing 17th to start the 100-lap race after being among the fastest cars all day in practice. "The car felt great and I thought I had a good lap," Gomez stated. "I guess I needed to drive the car into the corner deeper."
Despite the starting position, Gomez steadily moved through the field over the opening laps guided by spotter Dave Reed. "Dave was really busy on the radio as there was a lot of action out on the track," Gomez offered. "Dave does a great job on the radio and he helped me tremendously. We were able to work through he field and stay out of all the mess."
The action was slowed ten times for caution during to 100-lap race. "It seemed every time you get a rhythm going the caution would fly," Gomez said. "But we had a game plan and we were just focusing on it."
The Steve Graham led crew opted to pit on lap 52 for right side tires and would restart in the 18th position. Over the next 17 laps, Gomez worked his way up to the tenth position and by lap 76 he was running in seventh in sight of the leaders.
After a caution on lap 83, Gomez moved up to sixth in the running order and by lap 92 he was 5th. A final caution on lap 98 set up a green, white, checkered finish and bunched up the field. A slick track and a tight pack of cars produced plenty of fireworks over the final two circuits and Gomez was able to battle for position and cross the line in the fourth spot.
"We had not had any issues or contact all race until the final lap," Gomez said. "I am really happy to finish fourth and back up our run at All American. We are focused performing well every where we go and this strong finish is a testament to the team. Phoenix is an awesome place to race and I can't wait to come back."
The finish moved Gomez up to tenth in the standings heading into the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East/West challenge at Iowa Speedway May 21-23.
