Warn Survives Wild Race at Infineon for Solid finish
SONOMA, CALIF. (June 22, 2008) Jim Warn from Aurora, Oregon had looked forward to the NASCAR Camping World Series event at Infineon Raceway located outside Sonoma, Calif. since the season began. His patience paid off as he and his MJ 2 racing team finished in the 12th position in a caution filled marathon event Saturday afternoon.
Warn qualified 23rd in the 41-car grid for the 64-lap contest at the picturesque 1.99-mile road course in the beautiful wine country of Northern California. Though the scenery was beautiful, the racing was not, as numerous caution periods sent the race to over three hours in the hot summer sun.
Warn was mired in the middle of the racing action all race long after being collected in several on-track incidents. Even though his pit strategy was to pit once for fuel around lap 28, that strategy was null and void as he had to pit several times for the crew to massage body panel's around the tires do to the on-track action.
Warn showed a lot of patience during the race never allowing the incidents to change his focus. By lap 58, he was running 11th with his teammate Jeff Jefferson three spots ahead. A top ten finish was in sight.
Warn followed his teammate and had a bird's eye view of the action in front of them. When two cars spun in turn four, Warn followed Jefferson low but was speechless with what followed. As the 59 car of Kevin O'Connell was side-by side with Jefferson, he followed Jefferson into turn seven. Then all Warn saw was the underside of Jefferson Chevrolet flipping wildly over his head. "We were nearly taken out as well," Warn said. "After the 59 car got into Jeff, he hit us pretty good on the right side. I thought we were going to lose two cars but we manage to survive."
The finish played out nearly to plan. "We really thought we had a top ten finish going and that is what we set out to do," Warn continued. "I am happy for all the work the team has done this season and this finish gives us a lot of confidence for the rest of the season."
Warn's 12th place finish will unofficially move him into the top ten in the point standings after six races. He maintains third place in the rookie standings but picked up a couple of points on second place. "I think the rookie race is going to come down to the last race of the season," Warn said. "We have a lot of racing yet to do and I feel real confident about the rest of the season."
Warn and his MJ2 Racing team will be back in action Friday, July 4 at Toyota Speedway located in Irwindale, Calif. for round seven of the 13-race schedule.
