Norris crowned Champion in NASCAR Winston West Series
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 14, 2002)-- Eric Norris was presented with the NASCAR Winston West Series championship trophy and $94,000 in post-season awards during a spectacular awards ceremony at The Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Sunday, Oct. 13.
Norris of Dana Point, Calif., wrapped up the title with a runner-up finish in the season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway the evening before the award festivities.
The end-of-season awards pushed this year's winnings for the 37-year-old competitor to more than $193,000. Special awards presented to Norris included a $70,000 bonus from series sponsor R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Other special awards for the champion included $5,000 from Featherlite Trailers and $3,000 from 76 Race Gas.
Matt Stowe received the Champion Owner trophy, while the Champion Sponsor Award was presented to Jerry Crawford, president of JaniKing International. The team's crew chief, Jerry Pitts, won the Champion Crew Chief award.
A special Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to legendary driver Hershel McGriff, who retired earlier this season. The 74-year-old was cited for his contributions to the sport and for the many accomplishments in his career, which spanned seven decades.
The Stage 8 Locking Fasteners Rookie-of-the-Year Award for the NASCAR Winston West Series was presented to Mike David of Modesto, Calif. David also finished seventh in the championship standings overall.
For the second time in his career, series veteran Scott Gaylord of Lakewood, Colo., walked on stage to receive the Most Popular Driver Award. He also received the award in 1998.
Two other special awards-- the Gatorade Front Runner Award of $5,000 and the Bud Pole Award of $5,000-- were presented to Austin Cameron of El Cajon, Calif. His engine builder, Kevin Kroyer, received the Clevite Engine Builder of the Year Award for the third consecutive year.
About 400 people attended this year's awards ceremony, which included a surprise performance by grammy-award winner Neil Sedaka. The event marked the conclusion of the 49th season for the West's oldest stock car racing circuit.
