Bradshaw resets records in Memphis.
MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Defending NHRA Division 5 Top Alcohol Dragster Champ Alan 'QuickDraw' Bradshaw reset both official records and unofficial records during this past weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Memphis Motorsports Park. Bradshaw shattered the track record with a career-best 5.271 second elapsed time to qualify No. 1 in the Randy Meyer Racing A/Fuel Dragster.
Bradshaw, a practicing chiropractor in Odessa, Texas, then reset another record, an unofficial record this time, for one of the longest wheelstands in recent drag racing history. In his round one bout with David Wells, Bradshaw left strong, carrying the front wheels about six inches off the ground for the first 200 ft., and then rapidly rose to the point where the car was at more than a 45 degree angle with the ground. Bradshaw demonstrated his driving prowess, pedaling the car several times during the wheelstand, in attempt to bring the car down. Every time Bradshaw pedaled the car, the car would once again go skyward. Keeping his composure, Bradshaw finally brought the dragster down from it's flight at around the 900' mark, recording a 6.621 at 146 mph. Unfortunately for him, Wells had no such problems and took the win. The car only suffered minimal damage to the front tires and wheels.
"This was an exciting weekend," said Bradshaw. "In round one the car left pretty decent and carried the wheels a bit, then set them back down. Then for no apparent reason and without warning, the car went skyward at about the 150' mark. It definitely caught me by surprise. As I lifted, the car continued to rise and that's when I thought there was a possibility of a 'blowover.' Fortunately, the car started to come back down gradually and I rolled into the throttle a bit so I could minimize the damage upon 're-entry to earth!"
"The wildest part of the whole experience was that when I rolled into the throttle, it maintained the wheelstand at about 8 - 10 feet in the air all the way past half track until I lifted again and blipped the throttle upon 'touchdown.' All in all I've got one word for it WILD!!! Fortunately, we got away with this one with minimal damage compared to what it could have been. If you sum up the weekend with one statement, it could be said 'We had some highs and lows!" laughed Bradshaw.
Going into the weekend, the team also resigned major associate sponsor Tony Owens, Attorney at Law, who will remain on board for the entire 2003 season. Owens joins the team's list of associate sponsors that include MAR Leasing, Meyer's Truck Centers and Bradshaw Chiropractic Center.
"We are very pleased to have Tony Owens back on board," stated Bradshaw. "We showed him a taste of NHRA Drag Racing at the end of last season, and we are both thrilled to see what 2003 has in store. We hope to put the 1-888-CAR WRECK name in the winner's circle many times this year."
