MOCKSVILLE, NC. - Steve Vick began his season with a bang, literally. However, in the events following his pre-season debut, the Mocksville, N.C.-based clutch specialist has had anything but an explosive season. But, then again, starting the season off strong is not exactly Vick's forte.
Three events and two DNQs is not exactly the kind of scorecard that Vick has become accustomed to since running a 6.24 in pre-season testing.
"Our seasons have traditionally been slow to start," explained Vick, who won two national events in the latter part of the 2000 season. "I guess I'm not going to get in panic mode just yet. We will keep plugging away at this thing and something is bound to fall into place sooner or later."
For Vick, it can't come soon enough. During pre-season testing in Darlington, he rocked the nitrous camp with a string of low 6.2-second runs that netted him a berth in the final round of Chicago Style eliminations at the Groundhog Warm-up. The final round turned into a disaster as Vick's car suffered an intake explosion that caused extensive cosmetic damage.
He then went into the NHRA exhibition in Gainesville, Fla., and his car went every which way but straight. Vick then made the trek into Rockingham, NC., for the IHRA Holley Spring Nationals. He was bumped out of the quickest Pro Modified field in history, to that point, on the final session. Armed with renewed confidence, he upped the ante and made the show at the IHRA ACDelco Nationals in Dinwiddie, Va. Vick went on to reach the quarter-finals.
Vick was one of the sixteen Pro Modifieds invited to participate in this weekend's NHRA Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga.
