Atlanta: Team Jeg's Friday qualifying summary

Team Jeg's perseveres after abbreviated day of qualifying.

Strong showers and thunderstorms postponed much of Friday's qualifying action for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia. Once the rain subsided, it was business as usual for Team Jeg's drivers Jeg and Troy Coughlin.

Jeg and Troy entered the race coming off of their best qualifying efforts of the season in Bristol. Both had hopes of building upon that momentum when they fired up their Jeg's Mail Order Chevrolet Cavaliers at the Atlanta Dragway.

Troy was the first of the Coughlin brothers to roll into the water box. Troy posted a solid pass of 6.92 seconds at 198.41 mph in his first qualifying attempt of the weekend.

"We were really looking for a pass down the track," said Troy. "With rain in the forecast for tomorrow, it was pretty important for us to make a good hit in case they are forced to set the field with only one round of qualifying."

Jeg started his weekend off with a fine pass of his own, steering his Jeg's Chevy to a strong run of 6.90 seconds at 198.79 mph.

"It was a great way to get the weekend started," commented Jeg. "My hats off to the Safety Safari for doing a great job of preparing the track after fighting the elements all day. There were a lot of loyal fans who sat through the rain hoping to see their favorite driver's take a shot at qualifying, I'm glad that we had the chance to run for them."

Jeg and Troy are qualified fifth and tenth respectively after one round of qualifying from Atlanta Dragway.
