Bradshaw reaches first national event final round in Houston.
BAYTOWN, Texas - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Alan "Quick Draw" Bradshaw reached his first career national event final round during this past weekend's O'Reilly Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park. In the final, he fell just short of taking the win, losing to Duane Shields.
Bradshaw, who is a practicing chiropractor in Odessa, Texas, qualified his Tom Conway tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster tenth in a tough field with a 5.523 second elapsed time at 259.01 mph. In round one, he took out Karl Brounkowski's injected-nitro dragster with a 5.533 at 258.47 mph.
Bradshaw's next task would be to take on current points leader Art Gallant's injected-nitro machine. Bradshaw used his keen starting line reflexes to take the win on an enormous starting line holeshot (.430 to .585 reaction times - .400 is perfect), and held on to win with a career-best 5.474 at 259.56 mph over Gallant's much quicker but later 5.320 at 254.70 mph, with the margin of victory being a mere .002 of a second (approximately 10''). In the semifinals, Bradshaw took out yet another injected-nitro machine, this time it was Daryll Hitchman, with a 5.519 at 244.38 mph.
In the final round against Shields, Bradshaw encountered heavy tireshake, causing him to slow to a 5.616 at 256.06 mph, which was not enough to cover Shields' 5.472 at 261.70 mph.
"We were a little disappointed we didn't get the win," said Bradshaw. "But, all in all, it was a good weekend for the team, in making our first national event final round. My crew really busted their tail before the final and got the job done. We had been fighting tireshake all weekend, sometimes it was worse than others. It really jumped up and bit us in the final. That's drag racing though, we'll just try to get them at the next race."
With a solid debut to the 2002 season behind them, Bradshaw and the "Back Attack" Racing team are fired up about their next race, the NHRA Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan. Bradshaw won the Division 5 closer last year in Denver.
"After Houston, we are pretty pumped about heading to Topeka," stated Bradshaw. "This team is really coming around, and I think we have just as good a chance as anyone to be in the winner circle on Sunday there."
