Cory Mac almost, but not quite, at top of field

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 9, 2005) -- Qualifying ended today for the 18th running of the NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals with Cory McClenathan placing the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog Top Fuel dragster in the No. 2 position.

McClenathan, who enters eliminations No. 9 in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standing, just 72 points behind first.. The Lake Havasu City, Ariz. driver recorded an elapsed time of 4.496 seconds in the second of four qualifying sessions, just one thousandth of a second behind the top qualifier. This was Cory Mac quickest E.T of the young 2005 season.

"We were firmly in the field and got aggressive with the track today," said McClenathan. "On the final pass we had a good 60-foot time, but then went the way of most in that round when we smoked the tires. We'll back it down some tomorrow so that we can go from A to B. Lane choice will be important. We're optimistic about our chances but not overly confident because we know that anyone in this class is capable of winning at any time."

McClenathan opens with Scott Weis in the other lane. Weis qualified No. 15 with a pass of 4.777 seconds at 297.55 mph.

Sunday's Schedule: With crew chief Todd Smith calling the tuning shots, McClenathan begins his quest for the Top Fuel title on Sunday with eliminations for all classes beginning at 11 a.m. Time is local Houston time (CT) and subject to change at anytime.
