Point leader and defending series champion Arana aims for Houston win
HOUSTON (April 5) -- Lucas Oil Pro Stock Motorcycle points leader and defending Full Throttle series champion Hector Arana can't wait to get back to Texas.
"The city of Houston and really the entire state of Texas have always been great to me," said Arana, a native of Puerto Rico. "There's always a lot of fans and people who come by to cheer me on."
Arana, rider of the Lucas Oil Buell V-Twin, is coming off a runner-up finish at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, and is looking to build on his points lead April 9-11 at the 23rd annual O'Reilly Auto Parts Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.
"We've taken the primary motor down (since Charlotte) and honed both cylinders," Arana said. "We're going to freshen it back up and put it back together and hopefully run better in Houston than we did at Charlotte.
"It was too bad we didn't get to win the race in Charlotte, but we were runner-up and came out of there with the points lead. This is where we want to stay. We definitely don't want to drift off and then have to catch up later on down the line."
Arana leads past series champions Matt Smith and Eddie Krawiec by 15 points in the current standings.
One thing Arana has been keeping an eye on is the local forecast because he knows from experience that winds and temperatures can change in a hurry in Southeast Texas.
"You never know what you are going to get there," Arana said. "I've already got my eye on the weather. It can be a tricky place to race because the temperature can get high and the track can get very windy. You just have to play it by ear every day."
Once the event is over, Arana said he is planning on making the most of the break between the Houston and St. Louis events.
"I'm counting on the three weeks off so I can catch up on the things I have to get done," Arana said. "We were really busy in the off season with autograph deals and appearances so there's lots we need to do with the bike. I don't want to have to wait until the last minute to do everything."
But first things first; Arana's trying to get a win for Lucas Oil at Houston that would assure him of leaving town with the point lead.
