Line drives Summit Racing Pontiac to first winner's circle of 2007

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 1, 2007) -- After a red light start at the last race in Gainesville, Jason Line rebounded and put his Summit Racing Pontiac in the winner's circle today at the 20th annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. For Line, the reigning NHRA POWERade Pro Stock champion, it was his first win of the 2007 season.

For the second day in a row the event was a victim of Mother Nature, as rain once again caused NHRA to adjust the schedule. Racing was delayed from the original 11 o'clock start and the first pro cars went down the track at approximately 2 p.m.

En route to the final round, Line drove his KB Racing LLC, Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac GTO past Kurt Johnson, Warren Johnson and No. 1 qualifier Jeg Coughlin to his match up with Allen Johnson in the final round. It was the first time that Line and Allen Johnson have met in a final round.

Against Allen Johnson, Line left last, but the power of his General Motors DRCE3 engine was enough for Line to run down AJ and turn on the win light in his lane. Line covered the Houston Raceway Park quarter-mile in 6.661 seconds, his quickest run of the weekend. Johnson was approximately two feet behind at the finish line, tripping the clocks in 6.712 seconds. With the win, Line now has defeated Allen Johnson six times in 10 match ups.

"It sure feels great to win - it's a great day," Line said. "My hat's off to NHRA, and especially to all of the fans for sticking around and riding the weather out because it was a tough deal for everybody. But we got through it and it ended up being a great day. We struggled, but fortunately we managed to come up with a win. We got better as the day went on and that's what it took. But it's like that every week, a chess match with the racetrack, but our guys do a great job, and I did a good enough job driving to not mess it up. And congrats to AJ and Roy (Johnson) and everybody on that team. They do a great job and they're fun to race.

Like everybody involved in NHRA POWERade Drag Racing, ones thoughts were never far from the tragic death of Eric Medlen was injured in a testing accident at Gainesville Raceway the Monday following the ACDelco Gatornationals and subsequently died from those injuries the following Friday. Line expressed his thoughts:

"It's been a really tough week," recounted Line. "I told my wife on Thursday before we were getting ready to come here I just really didn't feel like going. It's just a tough thing for everybody. It wasn't like I knew Eric that well, just enough to say 'hi' to, but he was a great guy and he was always happy. Obviously that's the way the rest of us should try to be because we take this seriously, but the truth is there's more important things in life than just racing, that's for sure. Unfortunately, it takes something like that to make you realize it. I always think that something good can come out of everything, but right now it's hard to figure what good is going to come out of this. I just can't imagine. He was a nice, bright young man and certainly it shouldn't have been his time."

NEXT RACE: The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series now moves west to Las Vegas for the 8th annual NHRA Summit Racing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, April 12-15.
