Stivers pleased after his first event of 2010 season

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 11, 2010) - Rick Stivers, driver of the Trane-sponsored 2006 Dodge Stratus Pro Mod, said he is pleased with his first outing of the 2010 Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series season, earning his first round win and exiting second round in a peddling-effort against Melanie Troxel at the NHRA Spring Nationals this weekend at Houston Raceway Park.

Stivers started No. 8 after rain abbreviated the qualifying sessions, and won his first round over Troy Coughlin Saturday evening. On Sunday, he was paired with Melanie Troxel who had qualified No. 16 and defeated Stivers' teammate, top qualifier Jay Payne in the first round. Needless to say, Stivers wanted to exact revenge for his fallen comrade as he lined up against Troxel Sunday afternoon.

When the light turned green, Troxel grabbed a slight advantage off the line, and Stivers wasn't able to reel her in for a win. His car suffered tire-shake when he shifted into second gear, forcing him to pedal the throttle which ultimately cost him the win.

"I know Brad [Anderson, crew chief] had a quick tune-up in the car, and it would have definitely blasted right down the track had it held, but it slipped a little on the one-two shift, and that was all she needed for the win. I just couldn't reel her in," Stivers said.

At the stripe, Stivers had a 6.184-second pass at 237.71 mph to Troxel's quicker 6.018 at 244.74 mph.

"All in all, I'm pleased with what we were able to do and how I was able to drive. I wasn't 100 percent sure how I'd do because of the surgery I had several weeks ago, but the car gave me lots of opportunities to drive hard, and I was completely able to handle what she threw me," he said.

Stivers missed the first race of the season at Gainesville because of emergency surgery to remove cancer in his colon that was found during a routine colonoscopy. His doctors said they were able to get everything and that he would completely recover.

The Kentucky entrepreneur and horse farmer also had his spirits lifted when he got news that one of his fillies, three-year-old "Flashy's Song", running at Keenland in Kentucky took second in a $50,000 race, netting him more than $17,000 as the owner.

"That's always fun when we get a good run like that," he said of the horse race. "Overall, I'm feeling great, happy about the weekend, and looking forward to St. Louis in a few weeks," he said.

Next up for the Get Screened America Pro Mods is the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals in Madison, Illinois, just outside of St. Louis, Mo., April 30 - May 2.
