NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series
NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals
Houston Raceway Park
Baytown, TX
Team Jeg's - Pro Stock
Jeg & Troy Coughlin
Eliminations - Post Race
Team Jeg's out in round one.
A total of 32 factory hot rods battled over four qualifying sessions for a spot among the quick sixteen. The field was separated by .049 seconds (6.822 to 6.871). Team Jeg's filled two of the sixteen available qualifying positions. Jeg grabbed the No. 14 position and Troy took the No. 15 spot in their identical looking yellow and black Jeg's Mail Order Chevy Cavaliers.
Race day presented a new challenge for teams. The humidity increased and a cold front invaded the Baytown area. In addition, clouds filled the sky above the Houston Raceway Park facility for the first time all week and the track conditions improved as the weekend went on.
Jeg Coughlin and Warren Johnson went head-to-head in round one. It was a classic match up that has repeated over the last four years over and over.
Both drivers carefully staged their cars. Jeg was in the right lane and WJ
in the left. The reaction time advantage off of the line went to Coughlin by
.024 seconds (.452 to .476). The two cars looked like they were welded
together at the door handles until just before half-track. The win light
went to WJ by .0313 at the stripe. Jeg ran a 6.907 at 200.89 mph.
"We have some work to do between races to get these Jeg's machines where they should be. The guys have been busy working in the engine shop nonstop. We should have a couple of new engines ready for Bristol and some enhancements to our current power plants that will be a step in the right direction. I can assure you that there will be no Pro Stock team busier then ours leading into the Mac Tools Thunder Nationals," explained Jeg.
In the opening round Troy lined up next to No. 2 qualifier Greg Anderson. The match up put two Chevy Cavaliers into the ring. The advantage off of the line went to Anderson (.431 to .459) and he took it all the way to the big end. Troy crossed the beams with a very competitive 6.888 at 196.42 mph.
"We made good runs all weekend. We just need to kick it up a notch and qualify in the top half of the field. Our program is headed in the right direction and we will be working nonstop to get the yellow and black Jeg's colors back fighting at the level that we need to be to put us in the position to win," said Troy.
