Howard just misses win in Belle Rose.
BELLE ROSE, La. - There's an old saying in drag racing, 'if you don't redlight every now and then, you aren't trying.' Such could be said as consolation for NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Shelly Howard. Howard redlighted against her final round opponent Lee Callaway during this past weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, La.
Howard, who is a registered nurse in Tulsa, Okla., when not racing, qualified her Tom Conway tuned second in the field with a 5.565 second elapsed time at 252.39 mph. In round one, she took out Karl Brounkowski with a 5.576 at 253.71 mph, and then received a competition bye run when her opponent Erica Credeur could not make the call in the semifinals and soloed to a 5.633 at 252.28 mph.
In the final, Howard redlighted with a .353 light, giving Callaway the win. Howard feels that she just got too keyed up for the round.
"I just got a little too keyed up for the final," said Howard. "I know I picked a bad round to do it, but I guess that happens sometimes. I feel really bad letting my team down like that, but we win as a team and lose as a team, so just as if one of them had made a mistake, I wouldn't want it to keep one of them down; I can't let this mistake bother me. It's over, it's done and I just have to focus on our next race in Noble. That's going to be enough to focus on without worrying about what has already happened."
Howard, the defending Division 4 Champ, must win her next event, the Division 4 finale at Thunder Valley Raceway Park in Noble, Okla., Oct. 4-6, to surpass Callaway in points. She also must keep Callaway from reaching the final round.
"Noble is going to be tough, just like any race," stated Howard. "It's a situation where we just have to ignore the points and try to win it just like we would any other race. It really amazes me we are even in position to win the division after the start of the year we had. Whatever happens, I feel like we have a much stronger footing heading into next year having a handle on the new car."
