BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 15, 2004) - Ron Capps powered his Roland Leong-tuned green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to a semifinal finish Sunday at Brainerd International Raceway. It was Capps' second semifinal appearance of the 2004 season.

In the opening round of Funny Car eliminations, Capps' first round opponent and No. 9 qualifier Del Worsham suffered mechanical problems and broke at the starting line, allowing the former winner at B.I.R. to blast his Chevy flopper to the easy win.

Capps, who qualified eighth, used a startling line advantage to take the early lead on round two opponent Tim Wilkerson and never looked back, racing to a run of 4.952 seconds at 309.70 mph to collect the win over the No. 1 qualifier. Wilkerson, a fellow Chevy driver, raced to a run of 5.087 at 303.57.

Capps then used one of the best reaction times of eliminations to get the jump on rookie driver Eric Medlen and powered his Leong-tuned Chevy to a performance of 5.046 at 291.95. However, Medlen's Funny Car scored the narrow win after recording a pass of 4.961 at 308.35.

"It was a pretty good deal for the Skoal guys," Capps said. "You always have to get that one lucky break. Any driver will tell you that. We're making huge strides. Roland (Leong) is doing a great job. It was a tough weekend because conditions were different on Sunday. That 4.95 that we ran in the second round was the run we were looking for all weekend. The guys are giving confidence to me as a driver and we look forward to going to the next race."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 17th annual O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals, Aug. 20-22, at Memphis Motorsports Park in Millington, Tenn. Capps earned the victory at the Memphis race in 2000.
