BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 14, 2004) - Ron Capps drove his green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 8 qualifying spot and positioned himself in the top half of the Funny Car order Saturday at Brainerd International Raceway.
Capps, a two-time winner at B.I.R., clocked his best run of the weekend on Friday evening by racing his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy flopper to a run of 4.907 seconds at 310.84 mph. The veteran driver made two qualifying attempts on Saturday afternoon, recording passes of 5.017 at 296.37 and 9.516 at 93.62 after hazing the tires on his fourth and final qualifying attempt. This is the second time that Capps has qualified eighth this season.
"It helps to have lane choice in the first round," Capps said. "Once again, it just shows you how stacked up this Funny Car field is. We've got Del Worsham in the first round and the winner of that race has a great shot of racing the No. 1 qualifier (Tim Wilkerson). It doesn't matter who you race, you're going to have to run a tough car eventually, so you might as well run them early in the day."
Capps eyes a third career win at the Minnesota facility when he battles No. 9 qualifier Del Worsham in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday, Aug. 15 at 11 a.m. Capps is 15-5 in head-to-head match-ups against Worsham and 0-1 this season.
