Krisher seeking more success at Thunder Valley Nationals.
BRISTOL, Tenn. - There are 18 races to go in the NHRA POWERade series, but Ron Krisher can't help but think of being at the top of the Pro Stock ranks when the season ends in November.
With four No. 1 qualifiers and one event victory to his credit so far this season, who can blame him?
"I've been watching the points," Krisher said. "We'd like to make a run for the championship this year. We think if we can maintain the horsepower and the car combination, and with the people we have working for us, we've got as good of a shot as anybody."
The 2001 season is shaping up to be just as competitive, if not more so, than the 2001 season. Last year there were 15 different event winners in the Pro Stock category. In 2002, there have been five different winners in the first five races.
Krisher hopes to be the first repeat winner of the season in Pro Stock at the second annual Mac Tools Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway, April 26-28. Doug Kalitta, Ron Capps and Greg Anderson are the defending winners in their respective categories for the $1.9 million race, the sixth of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
Krisher opened the season with three No. 1 qualifiers, but couldn't snag the victory until the series hit Las Vegas. Now Krisher has more confidence knowing he has the quickest and fastest car beyond the qualifying rounds.
"Getting by first round (in Las Vegas) was like the biggest win I have ever had. I almost had tears in my eyes," Krisher said. "Once we won the first round, I was pretty confident that things were going to work out. You need some confidence to be successful in this sport and I didn't have any after what happened in the (first) three races."
A variety of problems plagued Krisher's top-qualifying Eagle One Chevy Cavalier in the first three races.
"I think we showed them that we do know what we are doing," he said. "We have good engine builders, we have a good race car in this Chevy Cavalier and we've made a lot of improvements to the race car (including) the clutch system and the brake system, it's all been a problem."
One of the biggest concerns Krisher had, was the brake system. The team has worked on the car and has seemingly found a solution.
"We've been attacking the car one issue at a time and finally the most important issue became the brake system," Krisher said. "We took care of that, got the car to where it staged properly and didn't drift. We are able to race the car without a mishap."
With the team's newfound confidence, Krisher hopes the team can maintain a high-performance level for as long as possible.
"I think everybody would agree that we do have the quickest and fastest car in Pro Stock," Krisher said. "You win a race, you do well, you qualify well, you make all good passes and the next race gets a lot easier. We're hoping we're on a roll for the time being, anyhow."
