Quickest pass of opening round proves to be too much for Troxel

BRISTOL, Tenn. (June 20) -- Funny Car driver Melanie Troxel had a great view of Sunday's quickest 1,000-foot pass. Unfortunately it was from the seat of her R2B2 Racing Dodge Charger as Round 1 opponent Tim Wilkerson eliminated her from contention at the 10th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.

After a mid-pack qualifying effort, Wilkerson came to life just past noon at the historic facility, zooming to a 4.233-second pass at 295.46 mph to beat Troxel's tire-hazing 5.533 at 141.65 mph.

"We came out here to win the race; we always do," Troxel said. "We know for us this entire race was kind of a test session. We needed to make some changes to get the car running the way we want and need it to be. That's exactly how (crew chief) Lance Larsen went through the weekend. We tried some different things and we learned a bunch. The end result was the same but for different reasons."

This race marked Troxel's eighth start of the year. Current plans call for the team to skip the next two events before switching back to In-N-Out Burger colors for the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals, which run in mid-July at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

"We'll be here for a couple of days after this weekend testing as long as it takes to get the car running better," Troxel said. "We're trying combinations that should help us progress. We want to get the car better before we head out to the West Coast again."

"The whole team is putting in a lot of work. As everybody knows, these Funny Cars can be finicky, and we're in one of those spots. We don't have the luxury of having that week-in, week-out data that other teams have but I have complete faith we can get it turned around."
