LUCAS OIL RACING STARTS SECOND AT BRISTOL DRAGWAY
BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 30) -- The rain-shortened NHRA Top Fuel session at the scenic Bristol Dragway benefited Morgan Lucas and his Joe Amato-owned Lucas Oil dragster Saturday at the O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals with a career best qualifying effort resulting in the No. 2 position after running a time of 4.561 seconds at a speed of 325.61 mph.
It just shows the preparation of his Lucas Oil team led by crew chief, Wayne Dupuy and their dedication to give Morgan a great ride every time he goes down the track along with a never quit attitude.
"Our team never stops working," said a pleased Lucas. "The fact that we received only one run today and we go in a positive direction shows the quality of the team. We hope to carry on with this momentum tomorrow and win our first race together."
On his qualifying pass, the Lucas Oil dragster motored through 'Thunder Valley's' early stages of the track without any tribulations, but down towards the end of the quarter mile, things almost became precarious with the front end darting around. The 21-year driver from Riverside, Ca. handled the situation like a veteran.
"I gave a tug on the brake in the shaky part of the track," said Lucas. "We couldn't leave anything on the table; we couldn't give it up. The car went out and did what we needed it to do. It ran better than we actually needed to run to make sure we made the field.
"Qualifying No. 2 is huge. We earned more 'Big Bud Shootout' points today. I know I have said it before, but I have to say it goes to show how hard our team works. It's not over by any means, and we have to win our first round tomorrow to take care of business and get our day headed in the right direction. We'll be all right and all we need is to put it all together."
Morgan will race Scott Palmer in the first round of eliminations, which will start at 12 p.m. EDT. ESPN2 will air the entire race at 7 p.m. EDT on Sunday, May 1.
