Anderson Switches Rides in Search of Charlotte Success

Mooresville, N.C., September 15, 2010 -- The NHRA's Countdown to One playoff pits the Top Ten drivers from the regular season in a six-race sprint for the Full Throttle championship. As such, every performance, whether good or bad, is magnified in terms of its importance to a particular team's title chase.

Therefore, coming off a quarter-final finish at the first stop in Indianapolis two weeks ago, Summit Racing driver Greg Anderson realizes the importance of using this weekend's O'Reilly Nationals in Charlotte, NC to close in on those ahead of him in the standings. Approaching this weekend's contest as an opportunity he must make the most of, the three-time champion is pulling out all the stops in his pre-race preparation, including the possibility of switching chassis.

"We're treating this race like it's the last one of the Countdown," said Anderson. "Even though we have five races left, as tight as the competition is in Pro Stock you just can't afford to put yourself in a hole, and after losing a little ground to the top two guys in Indy, this Summit Racing team needs a strong showing this weekend in Charlotte to pull ourselves back into contention. This is not a time to be conservative. We need to be aggressive, with both Jason (teammate Line) and I going the distance.

"That's why we're weighing our options as to what chassis we will use. Fortunately, we have a couple Summit Racing Pontiacs at our disposal, and although we don't quite know the reason why, switching pipe has worked well for us in the past. I believe it's a good way to shake things up, get everyone's heads back in the game with a fresh perspective, and give us that little extra spark that could put us over the top."

Under normal circumstances, one would think Anderson would have an edge on his competition racing at zMAX Dragway, as it is his team's home track, located less than a half hour away from the KB Racing shop in Mooresville. However, without any additional on-track experience to draw from, the three-time champion believes that if his crew has any advantage at the Concord quarter-mile, it would be in the intangibles associated with having an event in your area.

"I would consider zMAX Dragway a level playing field, as none of us have been able to do a lot of testing there," said Anderson. "It is a very quirky surface for the Pro Stock cars, with how you get off the two-step starting line often making or breaking your run. The first 60 feet on this track are extremely important, and that is what we focused on during our two-day test here last week. Our Summit Racing Pontiac did fairly well with it then, so, barring any drastic changes in the weather or track preparation, we should be in good shape.

"Still, any home field advantage would have to come from the added support we get there. From having all of our employees and friends come out to root us on and not having to worry about travel arrangements to being able to run back to our shop in case of any unforeseen circumstance, it's certainly a benefit, and one we look to take full advantage of this weekend. This is an extremely important race for us, and we need to make the most of it."
