CAPPS EARNS NO. 10 IN CONCORD QUALIFYING

CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 18, 2010) - Racing the NAPA Brakes Dodge Charger Funny Car, Ron Capps qualified No. 10 for the third annual NHRA Carolinas Nationals, recording his quickest lap of 4.149 seconds at 288.27 mph in the cooler Friday night session, one of four consistent passes this weekend.

His other laps included a 4.210/292.65 (No. 4) earlier on Friday, and a 4.240/293.35 (No. 8), and a 4.211/293.60 in the heat today. He will face his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Jack Beckman in the opening round of eliminations.

"We're consistent right now, but we're a tenth (of a second) off of where for sure I know (crew chief) John Medlen wanted to run," he said. "The good thing is the NAPA Brakes car is going down the track.

"We wanted to run a little better than that, and obviously it didn't give us lance choice first round, and the worst part is we run Beckman.

"DSR is a team operation but, I tell you, on Sunday morning all bets are off, and the way I have to approach the race is Jack entered the event second in points (then slipped to third after qualifying), and I want to be second in points right now. We're going to go up there and step on it and see what happens.

"Tomorrow is going to be hot. We may not have lane choice, but I really don't think that matters here.

"The car is feeling like it will go down the track, which is a little bit of an advantage as far as intimidation goes, when you're running somebody. When they know you've gone down the track in the heat it will put a little more pressure on somebody else. As a driver, I've got a little more confidence."
